About the role

This position is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning tasks following specialized disinfectant, waste disposal, and cleanliness standards.

Responsibilities

• Collect and empty trash and recycling in accordance with schedules.
• Clean and remove hazardous items, waste, and spills; dispose of, transport, or place such items in appropriate receptacles following proper procedures.
• Assemble cleaning carts; prepare, mix, and dilute cleaning solutions.
• Wash floors, corridors, stairwells, walls, partitions, and windows using mops, detergents, brushes, and other devices.
• Vacuum, strip, and wax floors; shampoo carpets using manual or mechanical equipment.
• Scrub and clean showers and restrooms, including toilets, sinks, and drains, using hand-operated equipment and agents.
• Replace light bulbs; dust or wash light fixtures and high places (such as ceilings) using ladders and other equipment.
• Polish wood and metal surfaces, fixtures, furniture, and equipment.
• Monitor supplies; notify supervisors of supply levels, equipment malfunctions, and maintenance issues.
• Replace, clean, and/or hang building fixtures and decorative items (such as curtains, blinds, and pictures).
• Move and arrange furniture for events.
• Perform grounds maintenance, such as removing snow, salting walkways, cleaning sidewalks, and mowing lawns.
• Perform routine laundry tasks and change bed linens.

Requirements

• Physically able to perform the tasks of the position.
• Able to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
• Must be flexible and available to work varied hours, including every weekend and holidays, with variable days off during the week.

Qualifications

There are no education or experience requirements for this class.

• Reassignment: Current New York State Department of Health Veterans Home at Batavia employee with permanent or contingent permanent status as a Cleaner.
• Preferred: Experience in a long-term care geriatric setting cleaning.

Salaries are prorated for part-time. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position.
