Mendocino Forest Products (MFP) is a group of companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) that collectively own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certified redwood and Douglas-fir timberland. MFP operates the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA and is the world’s largest producer of redwood lumber, employing 950 people across the Western USA. The companies also own and operate a 25-megaWatt biomass cogeneration power plant and wood pellet plant.

About the role

This is a non-exempt, entry-level position based in Ukiah, CA. The role involves keeping production areas clean and safe while assisting in other areas of the sawmill.

Responsibilities

• Keeps designated areas, as assigned by supervisor, clean and clear of sawdust, wood chips, bark, strips, and other foreign objects.
• Operates chain saw to cut up scrap lumber and broken logs.
• Uses hand tools to move sawdust, chips, and bark into conveyors, bins, and scoop on tractor.
• Operates Bobcat and forklift to transport debris to conveyors or disposal site.
• May pull strips off of transfer chains into conveyors to chippers.
• May keep lumber straight on transfer chains to trimmer.
• Empties all garbage cans in and around sawmill.
• Provides assistance where needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
• One month of related sawmill or planer experience and/or training preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as instructions, memos, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Knowledge of basic math.
• Must be willing to work multiple shifts.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to stand and walk; use hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
• Frequent climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
• Frequent communication, including talking and hearing.
• Must frequently lift and/or move items up to 10 pounds and regularly lift and/or move heavier materials up to 100 pounds, including lumber or equipment, with or without assistance.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

• Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts and vibration from machinery such as saws, conveyors, and hydraulic systems.
• Frequent exposure to airborne particles, including sawdust, wood chips, bark, lubricants, fumes, and risk of electrical shock.
• Occasional exposure to wet or humid conditions, high or precarious places (e.g., catwalks, scaffolding, elevated work areas), and outdoor weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow).
• Loud noise levels requiring consistent use of hearing protection in designated areas.
• Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as mandated by company policy and OSHA standards, including safety glasses or face shields, hearing protection, safety gloves, steel-toe safety footwear, hard hats, and respiratory protection if necessary.

Pay

Hourly rate: $24.87.
