About the Role

Under immediate supervision, this position is responsible for the personal care of children with physical disabilities during the school year. This is a competitive position requiring a Training and Experience Assessment. When vacancies occur, candidates who pass this assessment will be forwarded to hiring managers based on score ranking.

This is not a remote position.

Substitute Classroom Intervention Aide: Substitute positions are temporary, as-needed roles and are not eligible for benefits. Substitute employment may provide an opportunity to be considered for a permanent position when vacancies become available, but does not guarantee permanent employment.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with teaching activities under the direct supervision of a certified teacher.
  • Assists teachers, administrators, and school staff in maintaining appropriate student behavior in school buildings, on school grounds, during school trips, and on school buses during transport.
  • Verbally intervenes with Social-Emotional Disturbance (SED) students (K-12) when necessary.
  • Physically intervenes with SED students (K-12) if a student is physically harmful to self or others.
  • Uses Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) techniques when necessary, employing non-offensive verbal and/or physical mediation skills.
  • Talks with students to ascertain specific information concerning problems and assists them in developing an appropriate behavior plan.
  • Takes and records daily attendance of children; reports students’ absences of 10 days or more.
  • Works 1:1 and in small groups with students occasionally.
  • Attends required training meetings concerning the needs of SED students and other related subjects.
  • Participates in parent and administrator conferences when requested.
  • Escorts disturbed students to the administrator’s office for counseling or discipline; reports details to the administrator.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must have an Associate's degree (or higher) from an accredited institution of higher learning OR at least 48 semester hours or 72 quarter hours from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Alternative Qualification: Pass the Ohio Department of Education-approved Parapro examination administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) or The Ohio State University (OSU), and possess a high school diploma or GED recognized by the Ohio Department of Education.
    • To take the Parapro exam, contact ETS at escco.org or 614-542-4111. The test costs $55.
    • To register with OSU, visit OSU Parapro Registration. There is a $25 administrative fee plus a $55 test fee.
  • Must obtain an Educational Aide Permit issued by the State Board of Education prior to the start date.
  • Possession of Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification is required by the end of the probationary period. (Training will be provided by the Special Education Department.)
  • Prior to application completion, attach an official transcript or copy of degree indicating field of study, if applicable.

Skills

  • Knowledge of procedures and methods for monitoring and caring for SED students.
  • Knowledge of methods for physically restraining Behavioral and Emotional Disturbance (BED) students.
  • Ability to deal effectively with SED students.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to physically restrain BED students up to 21 years of age when necessary.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, administrators, students, and parents.
