Summary Of Classification

This class assists certified staff with direct instructional support and the general supervision and management of students. Employees work closely with the teacher and children to ensure programmed activities are carried out and a productive relationship is maintained.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of and respect for diverse student backgrounds and how they affect learning.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, rules, regulations, and Board policies and District procedures.
  • Knowledge of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Scientific Research Based Interventions (SRBI).
  • Knowledge of Social Emotional Learning (SEL).
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal and social skills.

Education And Experience

  • One (1) year of experience working with young children in group activities.
  • Preferred: Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university with at least 12 credits in early childhood education (EDE) or Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) with at least 12 credits in early childhood education (ECE).
  • Desired: Experience in an urban school district and/or a multi-cultural environment.

Essential Functions

  • Affirmatively assess student progress as directed, including proctoring tests and maintaining confidential records.
  • Maintain the security of records, materials, and equipment.
  • Assist students with physical needs, hygiene, toileting, eating, and dressing as needed.
  • Assist teachers in meetings with parents and displaying children's work.
  • Assist teachers with student supervision as assigned.
  • Assist teachers in observing, recording, and charting behavior.
  • Assist teachers in preparing for changing curriculum to meet diverse student needs.
  • Assist teachers in enforcing classroom rules and maintaining appropriate records.
  • Assist teachers in crisis problems and behavior management.
  • Assist teachers in preparing materials and equipment for direct instructional activity.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, students, parents, administrators, and other contacts.
  • Encourage children to talk and ensure adherence to safety standards.
  • Examine short- and long-term unit plans and anticipate supply needs.
  • Follow training and lead small group activities planned by teachers.
  • Give individual attention to children with various needs.
  • Keep supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly environment for students.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • Model and maintain high ethical standards.
  • Participate in cross-training activities as required.
  • Participate in professional activities and meetings.
  • Participate in training programs to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment.
  • Perform clerical tasks such as taking attendance, collecting milk money, issuing transfers, and recording and ordering supplies.
  • Prepare required reports and maintain all appropriate records.
  • Prepare the classroom environment for learning activities.
  • Provide instructional support as planned or coordinated by the teacher.
  • Read stories to children and lead small group activities.
  • Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Serve on school/system committees as required or appropriate.
  • Set up and operate audio-visual equipment and other materials for instructional purposes.
  • Supervise students during play and in various classroom settings and school activities.
  • Work with teachers to develop classroom schedules.
  • Take over classes in emergencies due to teacher absence.
  • Plan field trips as appropriate.
