About the Role
The Classroom Assistant provides academic and social-emotional assistance to assigned students under the direct supervision of a teacher, supporting classroom activities and student learning.
Responsibilities
- Assists in supervising learning activities, circulating within the classroom to provide support and reinforcement to students.
- Supports instruction as prescribed by the supervising teacher, reinforcing skills in:
- Social-emotional regulation and communication.
- Academics—reading, writing, math concepts, etc.
- Assists teachers in checking and evaluating students' work.
- Works with students individually and in small groups, using games, stories, or manipulatives to enhance learning.
- Helps establish and maintain classroom behavior standards in alignment with school/district initiatives (e.g., PBIS, Morning Meetings).
- Monitors and reinforces classroom rules and student behavior.
- Documents and communicates student progress and learning activities to the teacher.
- Escorts students to designated activity areas (e.g., music, art, computer classes, assemblies).
- Provides assistance to students with social-emotional or behavioral needs.
- Implements classroom behavior strategies, interventions, accommodations, modifications, and behavior plans.
- Participates in job-related meetings and maintains confidentiality of students and families.
- Contributes feedback on student progress through observation and record-keeping.
- Maintains cooperative relationships with parents, staff, and students.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Associate’s degree or two years of study at an institution of higher learning (preferred).
- High School Diploma/GED and willingness to earn highly qualified status.
- Experience in education or training within an organized learning environment.
- Experience with K-12 students preferred; for Kindergarten assignments, experience with pre-K or primary grades (K-2) is preferred.
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practices, positive behavior management strategies, and wellness practices (preferred).
- Basic email skills, including sending and opening file attachments.
- Proficiency in Google Suite (Gmail, Google Docs, etc.) preferred.
- Ability to:
- Assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics.
- Work effectively with children and communicate clearly.
- Establish cooperative working relationships.
- Multi-task and work independently with general guidance.
- Develop rapport with students while maintaining fairness, consistency, and respect.
- Plan, organize, and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
- Learn positive behavior and crisis management techniques.
- Respond appropriately in emergencies and remain calm under stress.
- Adapt to change and support a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Schedule
5.75 hours/day, 28.75 hours/week, 180 days/year.
Physical Requirements
This role is classified as light work, requiring the ability to exert up to 20 lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs of force frequently. The position involves sitting most of the time but may require arm and leg control for tasks such as lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects.
