About the role

The Overhead Distribution Lineman – A Class is responsible for all Apprentice and Class B & C responsibilities in addition to working energized and de-energized lines and equipment. Safety should be the number one priority; the lineman ensures safety standards for himself and his crew and reports any accidents, incidents, or potential safety hazards to the foreman immediately.

Responsibilities

  • Thorough knowledge of methods, practices, and equipment of electrical line work
  • Thorough knowledge of the hazards of electrical work and necessary safety precautions
  • Climb poles and perform strenuous duties in a variety of weather conditions
  • Follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Work with angry or difficult customers
  • Operate tools and equipment, including service trucks
  • Accurately read and record data from various types of meter dials
  • Dig holes and set poles for electrical lines
  • String wire on new construction or in repairing line breaks
  • Set and connect transformers and other electrical distribution equipment
  • Trim trees along electrical lines
  • Respond to work orders for utility disconnections, reconnections, new orders, and other public works service
  • Maintain assigned tools and equipment
  • Stand on-call after working hours as needed and directed
  • Perform related work as required

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience or equivalent hours
  • Valid State of Residence Driver License
  • Valid Class A CDL and current medical examiner card
  • Pass criminal and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) background checks
  • Pass a pre-employment drug screen
  • Complete OSHA 10hr Safety Training Program within 60 days
  • Completion of formal training program or at least four years of verifiable experience including three years of energized work
  • Successful test completions on rigging, grounding, transformers, hot sticks, weights, and torques
  • Successful completion of appropriate knowledge and skills examinations
  • Compliance with Safety Performance Standards
  • Completion of Insulate/Isolate Course
  • Ability for frequent travel on needed training requirements and potential for overtime including storm work

Skills

  • Math skills and basic knowledge of PMP and Electrical Theory
  • Ability to work outdoors in diverse terrain and all weather conditions
  • Physical capabilities to safely operate a motor vehicle in all driving conditions
  • Sight, strength, and coordination necessary to safely and effectively operate heavy and light equipment and tools
  • Lift up to 50 pounds
  • Climb poles and work at heights
  • Full-body exertion, including strenuous lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling
  • Ability to stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls
  • Specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus
