Description

CDL drivers are responsible for all aspects of truck operations, including moving equipment with a trailer. They haul asphalt and materials such as gravel, stone, etc. A valid CDL license is required to hold this job. Due to the nature of the asphalt business, the truck is often on the road as much as possible. However, there may be times when the operator needs to assist other crew members in placing material.

Primary Focus

  • Checking each and every piece of equipment or truck operated, including fluids, wear and tear, and lighting.
  • Keeping proper records of all material moved, sold, or distributed.
  • Performing regular preventative maintenance on all trucks by the operator of that truck.
  • Maintaining cleanliness of trucks and equipment inside and out.
  • Reporting maintenance or safety issues with equipment, job conditions, etc., to the safety officer or foreman.

Secondary Focus

  • Checking trucks at the start of a shift, including fluids, mechanics, tools, and equipment assigned to that truck.
  • Cleaning of equipment and trucks.
  • General maintenance of company-owned buildings and equipment.
  • Aiding the mechanic in more in-depth repairs.
  • Labor skills on a job site involving shoveling, raking, wheelbarrowing.
  • Operating basic equipment such as plate compactors, saws, and shop equipment for general maintenance or repair.
  • Lifting of objects over head in excess of forty pounds.
  • Carrying, moving, stacking, or otherwise transporting heavy objects such as buckets of paint, boxes of delivered goods.
  • Mixing coatings, painting.
  • Operating striping equipment, sealcoating units.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • A valid and unexpired Maine CDL license.
  • The ability to pass a drug screening test as required by federal, state, or local regulations.
  • The ability to work effectively with others as a member of a team.
  • The ability to take direction from others.
  • The ability to lift and carry heavy loads, climb ladders, and perform manual labor tasks.
  • Safety consciousness.

Work Conditions / Physical Demands

  • Frequently sitting while driving construction vehicles.
  • Occasionally standing and walking with freedom of movement on a regular basis, loading and unloading construction material in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. overhead.
  • Work occurs outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather conditions such as rain, ice, snow, and heat.
  • Will often be required to work long hours and sometimes nights and weekends during the construction and plowing season.
  • Regular physical activity requires walking, climbing, bending, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, and stooping.
  • The work environment is in a road construction setting, which includes exposure to various hazards such as dust, vehicle traffic, elevated noise levels, etc.
