Claims Counsel, CML
About the role
This role will manage claims arising from or involving policies issued from Sompo’s US Commercial Management Liability (“CML”) Private Company team. This position handles US CML Private Company (D&O, Fiduciary Liability and Fidelity) claims and provides legal review and support to Underwriting.
Responsibilities
- Manage U.S. CML Private Company claims, including related systems and processes
- Evaluate exposures and make substantive claim decisions (and support other lines as needed)
- Provide coverage, liability, and damages analysis for Private D&O, Fiduciary Liability, and Fidelity claims
- Proactively identify claim trends and emerging exposures affecting CML portfolios
- Ensure timely, accurate exposure and claim reporting (narrative and financial) to underwriting and management
- Collaborate with global claims colleagues and internal stakeholders; support projects, conferences/publishing, complex claims, and travel/other duties as needed
Requirements
JD (law degree) required; recent graduates considered with relevant experience
PREFERRED: Preferred 1–5 years in D&O claims handling or related litigation with increasing responsibility
PREFERENCE FOR EXPERIENCE: Preference for experience at both a law firm and an insurance carrier
Pursuing/holding insurance designations (e.g., RPLU, CPCU) strongly preferred
PROVEN COMPLEX D&O/RELATED CLAIMS HANDLING: Proven complex D&O/related claims handling (evaluation, negotiation, settlement) plus meaningful legal review and mediation experience
STRONG CROSS-FUNCTIONAL COLLABORATION: Strong cross-functional collaboration (underwriting/actuarial), communication/marketing, and analytical/writing/organizational skills; strong MS Office and claims systems experience (Guidewire/Genius/ImageRight a plus)
WILLINGNESS TO TRAVEL OCCASIONALLY: Willingness to travel occasionally for business meetings, conferences, etc.

Pay
Salary Range: $125,000-$175,000

Location: This position will be based out of our New York, NY; Garden City, NY; Purchase, NY; Morristown, NJ; Los Angeles, CA or Miami, FL office.
