About the Role
We currently have an opportunity for a Claim Consultant to join our Life Sciences or Cyber/Technology E&O team based in our New York City, NY; Chicago, IL; Plymouth, MN; Boston, MA; Canton, MA; Englewood, CO; or Irvine, CA office on a hybrid schedule. We are seeking a highly experienced specialty claims professional capable of independently managing complex, high-exposure claims with limited supervision. This role requires a trusted technical resource who can investigate, evaluate, resolve, and strategically manage sophisticated claims while providing thoughtful coverage analysis and business-oriented recommendations.
Responsibilities
- Manage complex claims from notice through resolution.
- Conduct investigations regarding liability, damages, causation, and coverage.
- Develop claim strategies and negotiate settlements.
- Establish and adjust reserves based on evolving exposure.
- Review and analyze specialty insurance policies.
- Identify coverage issues and prepare coverage correspondence.
- Address allocation, additional insured, and other insurance issues.
- Communicate coverage positions effectively.
- Direct defense counsel and litigation strategy.
- Manage experts, consultants, and vendors.
- Evaluate pleadings, motions, expert reports, and mediation positions.
- Participate in mediations, trials, and arbitrations.
- Maintain timely diary management and file documentation.
- Prepare large loss reporting, claim summaries, and reserve recommendations.
- Present significant claims to leadership when appropriate.
- Mentor less experienced claim professionals.
- Collaborate with underwriting, legal, actuarial, brokers, and insureds.
- Promote technical excellence and consistency.
- Operate with minimal oversight and demonstrate ownership and accountability.
- Proactively identify issues and drive matters to resolution.
Candidate Profile – Life Sciences
A senior claims professional with significant experience handling complex pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, healthcare, and life sciences claims, including:
- Significant bodily injury, catastrophic injury, and wrongful death claims.
- Product liability litigation involving pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, diagnostic, and other life sciences products.
- Matters involving multiple defendants, complex causation issues, and high-exposure litigation.
In addition to product liability experience, the ideal candidate will possess substantial experience handling Life Sciences Errors & Omissions and Professional Liability claims, including:
- Contract Research Organization (CRO) professional liability claims.
- Clinical trial-related claims and allegations arising from clinical research activities.
- Claims involving protocol development, trial administration, data management, regulatory compliance, site selection, and monitoring activities.
- Professional liability claims involving contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs), contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs), laboratories, testing facilities, consultants, and other life sciences service providers.
- Claims involving alleged errors, omissions, negligent professional services, and failures to perform pursuant to contractual or regulatory obligations.
The successful candidate must have a strong understanding of Life Sciences E&O coverage and be capable of independently evaluating complex professional liability exposures that frequently arise within the life sciences industry. This includes the ability to analyze coverage issues, evaluate liability and damages, identify key coverage defenses, and formulate well-supported coverage positions under specialty life sciences insurance policies. Special consideration will be given to candidates who have personally litigated life sciences matters as attorneys and possess firsthand experience developing litigation strategy, managing scientific and expert evidence, conducting depositions, participating in trial preparation, and evaluating product liability and professional liability exposures from both the litigation and insurance claims perspectives.
Candidate Profile – Cyber & Technology E&O
- Significant experience handling primary cyber liability and Technology Errors & Omissions claims, including ransomware, privacy, network security, regulatory investigations, technology implementation failures, professional services disputes, and other high-exposure technology claims.
- Strong familiarity with the cyber insurance marketplace and key industry participants is preferred.
The ideal candidate will possess substantial Technology Errors & Omissions claims experience and a deep understanding of E&O coverage, including the ability to analyze complex professional liability exposures, contractual liability issues, performance disputes, and technology-related loss scenarios. The candidate must be capable of independently evaluating coverage issues, formulating coverage positions, and clearly articulating those positions both verbally and in writing to insureds, brokers, underwriters, defense counsel, and senior management.
The successful candidate will also have significant experience working with outside coverage counsel, including directing coverage investigations, evaluating coverage opinions, developing coverage strategy, and managing complex or contested coverage matters through resolution. Experience drafting and reviewing reservation of rights letters, coverage position letters, excess position letters, and declination letters is required.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) required.
- 7+ years specialized claims handling experience.
- Experience in Life Sciences or Cyber/Technology E&O.
- Expertise analyzing specialty policy coverage.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to independently manage complex claims.
Pay
The typical base salary range for this position is $123,000 – $163,000, based on location, role, experience, and skillset. For candidates located in San Francisco, CA; Washington DC; our Massachusetts-based offices; and the New York City metro area, the base salary range is $143,000 - $167,000.
