Civil Water Engineer

Merrick & Company is seeking a technical Civil Engineer with experience in the design of water and wastewater pipeline, transmission, and interceptor projects to join our growing Public Works and water infrastructure team within our water practice. This role focuses on leading the design and delivery of small and large-diameter water, stormwater, and sanitary wastewater pipelines for municipal and utility clients across Colorado.

About the role

The position is primarily based in one of our Colorado offices: Greenwood Village, CO; Denver, CO; Loveland, CO; or Colorado Springs, CO. You will lead and support municipal pipeline design efforts, collaborating with a passionate team dedicated to community, sustainability, and innovation.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and delivery of small and large-diameter water, stormwater, and sanitary wastewater pipelines, including gravity mains, force mains, lift stations, and interceptors.
• Direct and manage a multi-discipline team of design engineers or technicians on water and sanitary projects.
• Develop and stamp plans, profiles, details, and construction specifications for small and large-diameter gravity and pressurized pipelines.
• Perform hydraulic modeling and evaluate alternatives for alignment, materials, and constructability.
• Lead coordination efforts for other discipline specialists, including survey, trenchless design, geotechnical input, environmental considerations, and other specialties.
• Prepare construction specifications, cost estimates, and engineering reports; review deliverables provided by others.
• Conduct condition assessment and rehabilitation evaluations for existing large-diameter assets.
• Support project planning, scope, schedule, and budget; manage QA/QC reviews.
• Interface with municipalities, utilities, and permitting agencies; contribute to proposals and presentations.
• Perform independent design tasks; review designs of others; prepare bid documents, including drawings and specifications.
• Organize all drawings, reports, calculations, and associated project deliverables.
• Interface with clients and local, state, and federal government agencies; lead project progress meetings and presentations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering.
• Minimum eight (8) years of experience in the design of water, stormwater, or wastewater pipeline design, with at least 2 years focused on large-diameter systems.
• PE (Professional Engineer) in the State of Colorado or the ability to obtain Colorado licensure.
• Public works design experience with local, state, and/or federal governments.
• Valid driver’s license, good driving record, and insurability under Merrick’s insurance carrier.
• Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Qualifications

• Experience with coordination of utilities, including utility owners and design of utility relocations.
• Skills in leading project teams.
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D, hydraulic modeling tools, Excel-based calculations, StormCAD, Infoworks ICM, and HEC-RAS.
• Strong technical writing and communication skills.
