About the role

The Civil Rights/Title IX Investigator supports the university’s compliance with equal opportunity and civil rights policies, including Title IX and other civil rights laws such as Title VI and Title VII. The Investigator assists in responding to and resolving complaints of discrimination and discriminatory harassment, including sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, and sex/gender-related violence (including stalking and intimate partner violence). This position also serves as a primary investigator on student Title IX complaints, conducting neutral, thorough, and prompt investigations.

Responsibilities

Investigation

  • Receive and provide a caring response to initial reports of discrimination and discriminatory harassment, including allegations of sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, and sex/gender-related violence including stalking and intimate partner violence, as well as reports of retaliation
  • Conduct a prompt, equitable and impartial administrative investigation into complaints of discrimination, including identifying and interviewing parties, and identifying, gathering, and assessing information relevant to the investigation; apply relevant policies and recommend findings of fact in individual cases
  • Exercise judgment regarding the resolution of discrimination complaints
  • Support and/or coordinate interim measures for parties in a discrimination complaint investigation
  • Consult with other University offices—including the Office of Legal Affairs, Dean of Students Office, University Housing, and Human Resources—as appropriate in the resolution of a complaint
  • Craft well-written, detailed investigative reports
  • Present findings before a hearing committee, when applicable
  • Actively foster and maintain a climate that is supportive of students, faculty, and staff and respectful of differences
  • Display strong and effective interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to listen well and convey sensitivity to and respect for individual needs

Community Outreach and Collaboration

  • Serve on UWM’s Title IX Working Group
  • Address and respond to questions from faculty, staff, and students regarding UW-Milwaukee’s procedures for addressing allegations of discrimination and discriminatory harassment, including sexual misconduct, sexual harassment, and retaliation
  • Attend professional development and training as directed
  • Provide training regarding relevant policies and processes
  • Promote awareness and educational events and activities related to equal opportunity, Title IX, Title VI, and Title VII policies, as requested
  • Serve on University committees as requested

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Perform additional duties as required

Requirements

  • One or more years of professional experience (including internships and externships) conducting investigations of any of the following: student conduct, criminal justice law, police, or private investigations, and/or investigations conducted by an office of discrimination and harassment, or an equivalent combination of professional experience and advanced education
  • Proven ability to present verbal and written information in a clear and concise manner to both individuals and groups

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Juris doctor (JD), or advanced degree in Student Affairs, Criminal Justice, or a related field (e.g., criminology, social work, sociology)
  • Completion of civil rights and/or Title IX investigator training
  • Experience conducting sexual and relationship violence investigations or civil rights/discrimination investigations
  • Working knowledge of laws related to Title IX and gender discrimination and retaliation, such as Title IX, Clery, VAWA, and Campus SaVE

Pay

$65,000 - $68,000. Final compensation will be based on the candidate's knowledge, skills, and experience.
