Civil Estimator
Job Overview
Spartan Earthworks, LLC is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Civil Estimator to join our preconstruction team. This role is responsible for reviewing project documents, performing accurate quantity takeoffs, developing competitive estimates, and supporting the operations team through bid development, project award, and construction phase changes.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Review plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, bid documents, and other project information to determine scope, risks, exclusions, and bid strategy.
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for civil/sitework scopes, including earthwork, grading, utilities, storm drainage, erosion control, roadwork, and related scopes.
- Solicit, review, and compare vendor and subcontractor pricing.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates, bid proposals, clarifications, inclusions, exclusions, and supporting backup.
- Aid in developing preliminary schedules, project sequencing, and production assumptions.
- Identify scope gaps, constructability concerns, value engineering opportunities, and potential cost impacts.
- Maintain organized estimating files, bid documents, takeoffs, proposals, and preconstruction records.
- Support handoff from estimating to operations after project award, including reviewing scope, assumptions, budgets, and project risks.
- Review drawing revisions, addenda, and construction phase updates to assist the operations team with pricing changes and change orders.
- Communicate changes in scope, bid strategy, sequencing, or schedule assumptions to the appropriate internal team members.
- Update and maintain preconstruction reporting, bid tracking, and estimating information.
- Work collaboratively with the preconstruction, operations, and leadership teams to support company goals.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum of 4 years of civil estimating experience, or 5+ years of relevant civil construction project management or field experience.
- Experience with sitework, earthwork, grading, utilities, storm drainage, erosion control, and general civil construction scopes.
- Strong ability to read and interpret civil plans, specifications, bid documents, and project drawings.
- Experience performing quantity takeoffs and preparing detailed estimates.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple bids, deadlines, and priorities at the same time.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with vendors, subcontractors, project teams, and leadership.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
- Experience with estimating and takeoff software preferred.
- Two-year degree preferred; four-year degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field is a plus.
- Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
Schedule
Full-time position, averaging 40 hours per week. Monday-Friday, standard daytime hours; 8 am - 5 pm.
Compensation
$85,000-$120,000 annually.
