About the Role

This Structural Engineering Internship at New Millennium (a division of Steel Dynamics Inc.) offers hands-on experience in both design and field work. Interns are directly involved in projects impacting production, safety, and long-term infrastructure reliability, working alongside engineers, contractors, and operations staff. The internship provides exposure to the full lifecycle of civil engineering in a manufacturing setting, combining office and on-site project work to prepare students for real-world challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Support operations and projects using engineering principles, including designing structural components from foundations to building systems.
  • Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and operations staff to ensure compliance with building codes and safety standards.
  • Contribute to fast-paced day-to-day engineering activities.
  • Analyze structures to ensure long-term durability under industrial conditions.
  • Assess and design structural components such as platforms, open-web steel joists and girders, steel deck, and welded/bolted connections.
  • Design and prepare field details for reinforcements, structural retrofits, or repairs, coordinating with external parties for project success.
  • Collaborate with contractors, engineers, and customers to coordinate technical and scheduling information.
  • Ensure all designs comply with local building codes, OSHA safety regulations, and industry-specific standards through documentation and review.
  • Participate in structural detailing using AutoCAD.
  • Participate in destructive load testing of steel joists.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Structural or Civil Engineering.
  • GPA of 2.7+ preferred.
  • Effective work practices, positive attitude, and team-oriented mindset.
  • Comfortable performing hands-on work in an industrial environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with engineering and operating staff.
