Civil Engineering Co-op - Spring 2027

SME's summer Co-op assignment begins in mid-May 2027 and requires a commitment to work full-time through late November or early December 2027. There is no minimum number of years of college education to apply for the Co-op program, but summer internships are only available to those who have previously completed a Co-op with SME.

Schedule

  • Full-time, mid-May through late November/early December 2027

Responsibilities

  • Support field construction quality control activities
  • Assess and evaluate project materials including soils, concrete, asphalt, and other construction materials
  • Work closely with SME Team Members and contractors to learn and assist in adherence to project specifications
  • Assist SME engineering staff in performing field evaluations and quality control testing
  • Gain direct exposure to consulting engineering practices and interact with technical specialists in geotechnical engineering, environmental remediation, pavement design, and materials evaluation

Requirements

  • Good driving record
  • Able to comfortably lift and carry equipment and samples weighing up to 50–60 pounds
  • Able to work outside at construction project sites in various weather conditions
  • Able to sit, stand, stoop, and/or kneel for long periods of time
  • Able to walk and work on uneven ground/terrain
  • Valid driver’s license and experience driving in the U.S.

Technical Skills

  • Basic computer literacy for in-field work, company communications, and report generation
