Job Summary

Dennis Group Civil Engineers focus on the land development and infrastructure for our industrial projects that involve designing and building new food and beverage process facilities. Our civil engineers have strong technical and design ability and excellent communication skills in designing land development plans, building pads, infrastructure for new buildings, landscaping, and everything from the foundation and below.

About the Role

Civil engineers are part of our Building Systems department and work closely with structure engineers and architects/designers. They are also involved with bid evaluation and local contractor initial contact in multiple project locations. The role is highly valuable at Dennis Group and faces engineering challenges that require strong calculation skills and for experienced engineers to have a Professional Engineer License (PE).

Responsibilities

  • Applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform assigned tasks as part of a broader assignment
  • Performs moderate and complex design tasks, receives guidance when necessary, on unconventional or complex problems, direction on modified techniques, and new approaches on assignments with conflicting criteria
  • Design a complete project, prepares complete project documentation, including complete CAD drawings
  • Performs procurement tasks such as bid list development, contractor initial contact, bid tabulation, and preliminary bid evaluation
  • Has understanding of discipline specific plan elements, and how to navigate a set of drawings
  • Performs construction administration tasks including complex submittal review
  • Responds to Request for Information (RFI)
  • Mid-size project primary client technical contract
  • Develops site of design document
  • Develops parking lot layout that satisfies development ordinances and regulations
  • Analyzes and detailed design of institutional, industrial, and commercial buildings sites
  • Prepares addenda documentation and narratives
  • Evaluates proposals and provides recommendations for sub-consultants
  • Provides specific areas of expertise in site layout, storm drainage-hydraulics and hydrology, site utilities (fire protection, water distribution, pump station)
  • Reviews historical site drawings to determine if site objectives align with existing conditions
  • Understands pavement materials, design of pavement sections, and construction methods
  • Determines land use characteristics and assign runoff coefficients
  • Calculates times of concentrations
  • Prepares storm water pollution prevention plan
  • Pre-development hydrologic analysis
  • Delineates complex watersheds and determines how to model watershed
  • Develops design approach for site factoring in topography, exiting drainage conditions, outfalls, site constraints, etc.
  • Detention pond design and outlet control structure to meet pre-development discharge rate
  • Designs channel linings
  • Advanced site grading using Civil 3D
  • Trust restraint calculations for pressure systems
  • Understands BMPs for EPSC, EPSC narrative
  • Prepares storm drainage report
  • Preparing engineering calculations and engineering sketches
  • Preparing land development plans, site grading, utility and drainage design for planning, permitting and construction for food and beverage processing facilities
  • Reviews drawings and coordinates the project team
  • Prepares bid packages and provides construction administration
  • Visits project sites to observe field conditions
  • Evaluates design constraints and resolves problems
  • Researches civil engineering materials and best practices
  • Supports talent growth within our organization
  • Handle complex issues and tasks with minimal supervision and advise subordinate team members on solutions to issues they encounter
  • Provides coaching and/or mentoring to a subordinate group when directed by supervisor

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
  • 8+ years of experience in civil engineer tasks involving industrial construction projects (foundation and below aspects - design land development, building pads, and infrastructure for new builds, etc.)
  • 8+ years of experience in drainage, grading and utility design for industrial or commercial projects
  • 8+ years of experience in AutoCAD, Civil 3D
  • Ability to travel to project sites as needed (15 days a year)
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times

Travel Requirement

  • Up to 25% travel required to visit project sites and other offices
