About the role

As a Senior Design Engineer you will design and review hazardous and toxic waste (HTW) projects, wastewater treatment/disposal systems, and water supply, treatment, and distribution systems. The role involves investigations, feasibility studies, and cost-effective design selection for environmental engineering projects.

Responsibilities

• Complete complex design assignments and reviews for HTW, wastewater, and water systems.
• Apply specialized technical knowledge of physical, chemical, and biological processes in water-quality control and hazardous-waste destruction.
• Perform investigations and special studies to establish process feasibility, define project scope, and select cost-effective designs.
• Research design manuals, catalogs, periodicals, and technical materials to identify innovative solutions for environmental engineering problems.
• Act as an advisor to the Construction Division and regulatory agencies on construction-phase issues.
• Prepare plans, specifications, and design analyses for site remediation, operations, and monitoring.
• Provide technical expertise in planning and design for cleanup of hazardous, toxic, and radioactive waste sites.

Requirements

• Must possess and maintain a Professional Engineer (P.E.) certification/license (copy required).
• Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, including a background investigation.
• U.S. citizenship is required.
• One-year trial/probationary period may be required.
• Direct Deposit of pay is required.
• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the following education and experience requirements:

• Basic Education Requirement for Engineer:
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in engineering from a program accredited by ABET; or
  • Degree including differential and integral calculus and advanced courses in five of the following seven areas: statics/dynamics, strength of materials, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, electrical fields/circuits, material properties, or comparable engineering science/physics; or
  • Combination of education and experience demonstrating thorough knowledge of engineering sciences and techniques, as evidenced by:
    • Professional registration/licensure (e.g., EI, EIT, or PE); or
    • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination; or
    • At least 60 semester hours in physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences; or
    • Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field (e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology) plus one year of professional engineering experience under supervision.
• Specialized Experience for GS-12: One year of specialized experience at the GS-11 level, including:
  • Preparing plans, specifications, and design analyses for site remediation, operations, and monitoring; and
  • Providing technical expertise in planning and design for cleanup of hazardous, toxic, and radioactive waste sites.

No substitution of education for experience is permitted for this position. Foreign education must be evaluated by a private organization specializing in foreign credential interpretation to be deemed equivalent to a U.S. accredited program.
