About the role
This is a developmental position in the Construction, Analysis, Science, Infrastructure & Engineers (CASIE) Career Field. The incumbent works under closer supervision and in a developmental capacity, performing assignments and completing training aimed at gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the duties of the next higher level position. Responsibilities increase progressively as experience and training are received.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the design and development of civil engineered devices, equipment, or systems using established criteria or specifications.
- Assist in the inspection and evaluation of civil engineered projects and resources.
- Identify civil engineering problems and recommend corrective action.
- Review technical civil engineering project design documents, computations, and submittals.
- Prepare technical civil engineering reports and studies with completeness, technical adequacy, and adherence to prescribed formats.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must sign a mobility agreement if selected.
- Must sign an Army Fellows Participant Agreement if selected.
- Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
Qualifications
To qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.
Basic Requirement for Civil Engineer:
- Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher) in engineering. The program must:
- Lead to a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or
- Include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas:
- Statics, dynamics;
- Strength of materials (stress-strain relationships);
- Fluid mechanics, hydraulics;
- Thermodynamics;
- Electrical fields and circuits;
- Nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and
- Any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
- Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished:
- A thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and
- A good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
- Professional registration or licensure (e.g., Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or Professional Engineer (PE)).
- Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration.
- Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences, including the courses specified above.
- Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field (e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology), provided the applicant has at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision.
In Addition to the Basic Requirement:
- Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:
- Assisting in the design and construction of civil engineering structures or systems using established criteria or specifications; or
- Monitoring civil engineering projects and resources; or
- Identifying civil engineering problems and recommending corrective action.
- Education: One full year of graduate-level education in a field demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Engineering.
- Superior Academic Achievement (SAA): Successful completion of all requirements for a bachelor's degree with SAA in a qualifying curriculum. SAA is based on:
- Class standing (upper third of graduating class); or
- Grade-point average (3.0 or higher out of 4.0 overall, or 3.5 or higher in the major field); or
- Membership in an approved national scholastic honor society.
- 5-Year Engineering Program: Successful completion of a 5-year program of study (at least 160 semester hours) leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering in an ABET-accredited college or university.
- Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify if the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.
Foreign Education: If using education completed in foreign colleges or universities, you must show that the education has been evaluated by a private organization specializing in interpretation of foreign education programs and deemed equivalent to a U.S. accredited program.
