Civil Engineer
Job Summary
Talen Energy is seeking a Civil Engineer to join the team at the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station in Berwick, Pennsylvania. The station is a large, dual-unit Boiling Water Reactor facility that provides approximately 2700 MW of electricity to the Northeastern Pennsylvania grid. Susquehanna Steam Electric Station is a member of the Utilities Service Alliance.
About the Role
The Civil Engineer will be responsible for engineering activities related to civil/structural aspects at the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station. They will work independently with minimal guidance, utilizing their knowledge of civil engineering principles. They may also provide guidance and direction to other Talen Energy employees to support the development of high-quality, timely, and cost-effective engineering solutions to technical problems.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide in-depth technical expertise to develop, manage, and implement engineering analysis, activities, and programs.
- Use existing procedures to investigate, evaluate, and assist in producing technically correct and cost-effective designs or recommendations that solve ongoing problems.
- Directly interface with other workgroups (such as Operations, Maintenance) and Station Leadership regarding plant issues and improvement initiatives.
- Build relationships that facilitate knowledge transfer, cross-functional understanding, and effective communication of work products.
- Aid in developing procedures, improving design recommendations, and making new equipment purchase recommendations.
- Lead multi-disciplinary teams as the Lead Responsible Engineer for plant design changes.
- Prepare and review design change packages and design calculations in accordance with plant procedures.
- Support outages, emergency issues, and generation challenges, which may require shift work or off-hours work.
- Participate in the Emergency Response Organization, where the successful candidate will be assigned a specific duty.
- Perform other assigned duties as directed by the Civil/Structural Design Engineering Branch Manager.
- Inspect structures, systems, and components in the industrial areas of a nuclear power plant.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Must meet nuclear requirements for Unescorted Plant Access.
- At least five years of related civil or structural engineering experience in nuclear or relevant industry.
- Preferred: Knowledge of AISC & ACI design codes, NRC requirements for safety-related structures, working knowledge of Seismic/Dynamic Qualification/Program, Heavy Load Program, Tornado-generated Missile Impact considerations, rigging evaluations, and temporary shielding evaluations.
- Previous commercial nuclear experience.
- Familiarity with civil/structural design requirements for Nuclear Power plants.
- Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Pennsylvania, or a licensed professional engineer in another state with the ability to obtain Pennsylvania licensing within a year of hire.
Preferred Knowledge and Experience
- Knowledge of industry-standard design processes.
