Civil CAD Technician

About the role
The Civil CAD Technician supports construction and preconstruction teams by creating, modifying, and managing construction drawings, topographical profiles, and 3D surfaces for civil engineering projects. This is a full-time, office-based position in Birmingham, AL, with occasional site visits and up to 25% travel.
Responsibilities
- Drafting: Create plans and schematics using AutoCAD / AutoCAD Civil 3D to support project pursuits or ongoing projects.
- Surface Modeling: Modify and revise existing drawings to produce interim work surfaces for sequencing and planning.
- Quantity Survey: Prepare initial quantity take-offs for estimates and progressive quantity reports for payment certificates using AutoCAD Civil 3D and Trimble Business Center.
- Proposal Support: Develop schematics and marketing materials for project pursuits.
- Prepare DTM: Assist in processing raw point clouds to produce Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) and topographical plans.
- Coordinate with Team Members: Collaborate with project managers, estimators, and engineers to understand project requirements.
- Review and Quality Assurance: Conduct quality control checks to ensure accuracy of drawings and surfaces.
- Document Management: Maintain and organize a comprehensive filing system for drawings and related documents.
- Prepare Drafts for Approval: Present drafts to project leads and stakeholders, incorporating feedback as needed.
- Value Engineering: Work with teams to develop solutions to technical problems and suggest design improvements.
- Support Project Timelines: Assist in meeting deadlines by managing workflow and resources efficiently.
- Technology and Tool Management: Stay updated with the latest AutoCAD tools to enhance productivity.
Requirements
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D (2D/3D drafting), Trimble Business Center, and Microsoft Excel.
- Knowledge of drafting techniques, engineering standards, and map projections.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics.
- High accuracy and attention to detail in all work aspects.
- Strong communication skills for collaboration with team members, engineers, and clients.
- Organizational skills to prioritize tasks and manage deadlines.
- Problem-solving ability to identify design issues and propose solutions.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record meeting company risk management guidelines.
Qualifications
- Diploma, Associate’s, or Bachelor’s degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field (preferred).
- 4+ years of experience as a CAD Operator or similar role in civil construction or engineering.
