Chorus and Theater Teacher (Long-Term Sub)

Contract days per current collective bargaining unit agreement, exempt. Reports to the School Principal or designee.

About the Role

The Music Teacher is responsible for the education of each pupil in their charge, empowering them with strong musical, theatrical, and creative skills to become informed, thoughtful global citizens. The teacher leads the choral and theatre programs, teaches other assigned music courses, and collaborates with students, parents, staff, and faculty to achieve the goals set forth in the Souhegan High School Mission Statement.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree
• State of NH Certification endorsement #1200 (or eligible for NH Certification)
• Applicants will be subjected to a criminal background check as required by law (RSA 189:13-a)

Responsibilities

• Participate in curriculum construction and revision, developing and administering music education curriculum consistent with district goals and objectives.
• Employ a pedagogical approach that promotes understanding of subject matter through clear explanations and cognitively demanding tasks aligned with lesson objectives.
• Use students’ learning styles, interests, and needs to plan lessons, rehearsals, assessments, and group activities, ensuring adequate preparation and instruction time.
• Create a safe, intellectual, and creative classroom environment where students take artistic risks with challenging repertoire and roles.
• Plan and administer formal and informal assessments in multiple formats, using data to drive instruction and monitor progress.
• Direct and produce choral concerts and theatrical productions, including selecting repertoire/scripts, running auditions, and coordinating logistics.
• Monitor student progress and communicate with stakeholders, including families, while maintaining student privacy.
• Maintain accurate records for student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures.
• Engage in professional development to improve practice, setting meaningful goals for enhancing student learning outcomes.
• Prioritize students’ needs in all aspects of practice and maintain productive professional relationships with colleagues.
• Implement accommodations and modifications for IEPs, 504 plans, and other support plans, reinforcing positive behavior and addressing misconduct.
• Follow district policies, procedures, and curriculum, participating in meetings such as parent conferences, in-service training, and IEP team meetings.

• Expertise in choral music, theatre, and general music education
• Ability to direct and produce choral concerts and theatrical productions, including auditions, rehearsals, and performance logistics
• Flexibility, adaptability, and strong organizational and communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to implement culturally responsive teaching practices
• Ability to build a warm and inclusive classroom environment
• Willingness to work evening and weekend hours for concerts, rehearsals, and performances

Preferred Skills

• Experience teaching multiple music disciplines (e.g., choir, general music, music theory, band)
• Experience with competency-based education and assessment
• Knowledge of the National Association for Music Education standards
• Experience with interdisciplinary instruction and co-teaching models
• Experience coordinating with technical, costume, and set design support for theatre productions

Physical Requirements

• Frequent standing in front of class, choir, or cast for instruction, rehearsal, and direction
• Frequent sitting at a desk or piano for classroom and rehearsal instruction
• Frequent movement around the classroom, rehearsal space, and stage to supervise and interact with students
• Occasional escorting of students to other classes or performance spaces outside the assigned classroom
• Occasional/frequent lifting and moving of music stands, instruments, set pieces, and props
• Occasional/frequent bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling
• Infrequent/rare driving
• Ability to operate a personal computer, sound and lighting equipment, or other related tools
