About the role
The Children’s Respite Specialist provides high-level behavioral support to children in our outpatient respite center while they are transitioning from an inpatient behavioral health unit. Responsibilities include assisting with self-injury and disruptive behavior, fostering a safe environment, implementing personalized care plans, and supporting daily living activities.
Responsibilities
- Provide support to children during moments of self-injury or disruptive behavior, following individualized care plans
- Foster a safe, therapeutic environment that promotes emotional regulation, stability, and a sense of belonging for children in crisis
- Implement personalized goals and strategies outlined in each child's Staff Action or Service Plan
- Aid children with daily living activities (ADLs), such as bathing, toileting, dressing, eating, and mobility, to support comfort and dignity
- Teach and reinforce skills that promote independence, including behavior management, social interaction, and health and safety awareness
- Accompany and transport children to community activities that align with their interests and personal development
- Ensure the ongoing safety and well-being of each child in the home, community, and during transportation
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED required
- One year experience working with children with I/DD or a Mental Health diagnosis preferred
- Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification or willingness to obtain preferred
- Experience working with children with behavioral needs preferred
Qualifications
- Valid New York State driver license in accordance with the Agency Vehicle and Driving Policy
- Transportation necessary to meet program needs
- Teamwork and professionalism required
- Willingness to visit children and families in their home setting, travel outside Onondaga County may be required
- Ability to demonstrate direct care duties, including personal assistance
- Ability to lift 75 pounds
