Position Summary

Provide activities and interventions to help children and families cope with medical situations and meet their developmental, emotional and educational needs.

Job Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates the ability to adapt technique/treatment to age of population served, including newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, while providing care/service with respect to cultural differences and spiritual needs.
  • Prepare and accompany children and families during procedures and/or surgeries performed in specific units.
  • Participate in grant writing and new program development.
  • Observe and assess needs and concerns of children and families.
  • Participate in psychosocial, interdisciplinary and/or team meetings/rounds to communicate developmental and psychosocial needs of children.
  • Oversee daily activities of Patient Activity Assistants and volunteers on assigned units.
  • Participates in community outreach and new program development with CLS Coordinator.
  • Participates actively in continuing education to remain current with new advances in Child Life field.
  • Maintain professional competence by keeping abreast of research and evidence based practices within Child Life field through attendance at conferences, continuing education presentations, etc.
  • Participates in planning and implementation of special events, guests, support groups, and other events.
  • May supervise Child Life internship program.

Qualifications

  • Current Certification as a Child Life Specialist, as specified in policy (within one year of hire).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) verification course through American Heart Assoc. or American Red Cross - Healthcare Provider CPR.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Child Life related field.
  • Minimum of 600 hour clinical internship.
  • Professional knowledge of Child Life theory and practice.
  • Understand and utilize evidence based practice concepts, including play, preparation, and assessment.
  • Understand human/child growth and development theory and practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.
  • Possess personal computer skills.
  • Possess problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
