About the role

This position applies and enforces the City of Albany's policies and procedures while planning, designing, implementing, maintaining and/or improving assigned engineering functions, systems or projects. It involves monitoring all safety requirements, coordinating and maintaining productive construction schedules, preparing field/cost estimates, easements, graphs and construction drawings, assisting in designing sewers, drainage facilities, roads and alleys, conducting field and/or site visits, performing various studies, providing leadership/supervision to field technicians, responding to emergency calls, maintaining comprehensive computerized accident report system, preparing reports, instructing review and inspecting work of contractors and engineering crews, contacting, negotiating and coordinating projects, maintaining engineering documents, records and files, evaluating performance of subordinate employees, operating a company vehicle, and performing other related tasks as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Apply and enforce City of Albany's policies and procedures while planning, designing and/or implementing maintenance and improvement projects for the Engineering Department.
  • Monitor and enforce all relative safety requirements.
  • Coordinate and maintain productive construction schedules between engineering divisions and the general/business public.
  • Prepare field/cost estimates, easements, graphs and construction drawings.
  • Assist in designing sewers, drainage facilities, roads and alleys, etc.
  • Assist with calculations with the site plan review process.
  • May produce detailed drawings, estimates, specifications and designs for the City of Albany.
  • Perform various studies, such as volume, spot speed, travel time and delay, intersection and driveway, traffic access and impact, parking, lighting, etc.
  • Conduct field visits to observe and analyze various engineering crews, operations.
  • Contact, negotiate and coordinate projects for engineering considerations with customers, contractors' engineers, department heads and the public.
  • Maintain engineering documents, records and files.
  • Evaluate the performance of subordinate employees, completing the performance appraisal process or serve in supervisory capacity in the absence of engineering manager.
  • Operate a company vehicle.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned or required.

Requirements

An Associate's Degree or its equivalent in engineering or related area supplemented with three-five years experience in civil, traffic, safety, systems engineering or CAD operations required, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skill and abilities. A Bachelor Degree is highly desirable.

Qualifications

A specialized knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil and Electrical Engineering is required, along with a considerable full range knowledge of generally accepted and commonly used methods, principles and theories relating to these fields.

Skills

Knowledge of engineering principles and practices, ability to prepare detailed drawings, estimates, specifications and designs, proficiency in using CAD software, ability to coordinate and maintain construction schedules, strong communication and negotiation skills, ability to conduct field visits and analyze engineering operations, and the ability to operate a company vehicle.
