Chief Utility Plant Operator - NEBR Wastewater Treatment Plant
Brunswick County Public Utilities is currently accepting applications for a Chief Utility Plant Operator to join our Public Utilities Department at the Northeast Brunswick Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in Leland, NC.
About the role
The Chief Utility Plant Operator oversees the daily operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility and associated effluent water systems, ensuring all processes operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with local, state, and federal permits. This position serves as Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) for the NW Brunswick Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant and reports to the Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent. This is an essential employee position, requiring work during inclement weather, non-emergency closures, and/or county disaster situations.
Responsibilities
- Monitor and control plant processes through SCADA and field inspections.
- Supervise and train plant staff.
- Conduct process control testing.
- Maintain detailed operational records.
- Coordinate maintenance activities.
- Assist with budget development, procurement, and project coordination.
Requirements
- Vocational/Technical school diploma and three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in wastewater treatment plant operation; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver License.
- Current North Carolina Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification.
- Supervisory and/or leadership/staff development experience is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of advanced wastewater treatment processes and process optimization techniques.
- Experience with SCADA systems and computerized maintenance management systems is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Physically able to operate wastewater plant machinery and office equipment, including pumps, chlorinators, mixers, computers, and two-way radios.
- Able to operate a motor vehicle.
- Able to exert up to 110 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 5 pounds of force frequently.
- Able to walk, stand, stoop, bend, climb, and reach.

Pay
$57,761 - $98,196 Annually
