About the role

The City of Sioux City, Iowa, is seeking an experienced, forward-thinking, and community-oriented law enforcement executive to serve as its next Chief of Police.

Responsibilities

- Lead the Sioux City Police Department in providing safe, effective, and efficient law enforcement services. - Serve as a key member of the City’s executive leadership team, reporting directly to the City Manager. - Ensure the department adheres to high standards of professionalism, integrity, and community engagement. - Develop and implement strategic initiatives to improve police services, strengthen organizational resources, and enhance operational effectiveness. - Foster collaboration and partnership with community stakeholders, including local businesses, schools, and non-profits. - Promote community-oriented policing principles and innovative approaches to modern policing. - Oversee recruitment and retention efforts to maintain a diverse and skilled workforce. - Manage the department's budget and ensure fiscal responsibility. - Represent the department at various community events and meetings. - Maintain compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

- Significant command-level law enforcement experience, including at least five years of command staff experience in a community with a population of 50,000 or greater. - Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, business administration, or a related field. - Master’s degree and advanced executive leadership training such as the FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, or Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command are highly desirable.

- Strong interpersonal skills and a participative management style. - Demonstrated success in community engagement and organizational leadership. - Ability to lead within a complex and evolving environment. - Knowledge of community-oriented policing, recruitment and retention strategies, emerging technologies, and modern policing practices.
