About the role
Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. The Chief of Police will plan, develop, organize, actuate, direct and manage law enforcement programs that will ensure the (1) protection of college property and facilities, (2) detection and prevention of criminal activity, (3) enforcement of traffic and parking rules and regulations, (4) enforcement of rules and regulations pertaining to the protection and safety of faculty, staff, students, visitors and the general public.
Responsibilities
- Plan, develop, organize, actuate, direct and manage law enforcement programs that will ensure the (1) protection of college property and facilities, (2) detection and prevention of criminal activity, (3) enforcement of traffic and parking rules and regulations, (4) enforcement of rules and regulations pertaining to the protection and safety of faculty, staff, students, visitors and the general public.
- Direct, plan, organize, and control the activities of the Department of Police & Public Safety.
- Manage and supervise the day-to-day operations of the Department of Police & Public Safety.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
- Oversee the administration of security, safety, and emergency preparedness programs.
- Manage and coordinate the response to emergencies and crises.
- Collaborate with other departments to enhance overall safety and security.
- Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to law enforcement.
- Provide leadership and guidance to subordinate officers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent skills in computers, related word processing, and spreadsheet software.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Virginia and applicable federal laws.
- Strong working knowledge of investigative techniques and practices.
- Considerable knowledge of leadership principles and management techniques.
- High moral character.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks.
- Planning, organizing, and completing work within prescribed deadlines.
- Ability to carry equipment and cover a large expanse of buildings and grounds with numerous steps, on foot.
- Effective communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively with others to achieve goals and resolve problems, with an emphasis on customer service.
- Certification as a police officer as mandated by a state department of Criminal Justice Services or police certifying body.
- Possession of a valid Virginia drivers license.
- Basic law enforcement certification from a certified police-training academy within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Completion of a first-line supervisory and/or a mid-management law enforcement training/course of study.
Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or equivalent.
- Police leadership and supervisory training related to the duties of the position.
- Experience in the use of public safety/emergency management software; including but not limited to: emergency notification systems, access control, camera surveillance systems, and/or incident reporting.
- Experience in security and public safety at a college or university.
- Completion of a first-line supervisory and/or a mid-management law enforcement training/course of study.
Skills

Benefits
Commensurate with experience.
Pay
$115,000 - $130,000
Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM. Weekend and evening hours will also be required in order to perform the duties of the position.
