Responsibilities
- Acts as party chief for a field survey crew engaged in making surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control survey projects; participates in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers; assigns and monitors work and provides input for evaluation of members of the field survey crew
- Gathers field survey data through use of conventional and Global Positioning System (GPS) methods; sets up, adjusts, and operates surveying equipment, including electronic total station, data collector, and GPS equipment, in order to measure distances, elevations, and angles; prepares field notes and drawings; performs field surveying for roadway, bridges, and flood control projects
- Performs surveying calculations using engineering calculator or data collector; analyzes raw data for mathematical closure and geometric accuracy
- Performs the duties of the Party Chief and acts as Project Surveyor in supervisor’s absence; performs field surveys, including staking, boundary control
- Trains other crew members on the latest technology in surveying equipment and finds new and innovative ways of doing surveys
- May perform mapping review or other related office survey duties as a temporary assignment to satisfy the training/experience requirement for the Professional Land Surveyor's License
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Must be a member in good standing with the Operating Engineers Local 3 (NorCal) Union or ability to join and qualify as Party Chief
- Must have a valid California driver’s license and meet and maintain Company driver eligibility requirements
- Preferred previous TWIC card holders
- Proficient with Trimble Equipment, including Total Stations, Levels, Global Positioning Systems, Data Collection equipment and software
- Must be able to understand construction plans, cut sheets, and take good field notes / sketches
- Some company paid travel in OE3 area required
- A working knowledge of Caltrans standards, coordinate geometry and state plane coordinates is a plus
