Chief Medical Officer - Penn Medicine Doylestown Health

About the Role

Penn Medicine Doylestown Health (PMDH) seeks a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to blend strong business and financial acumen with a thoughtful, relationship-focused leadership style. This role partners closely with the CEO and executive leadership to guide PMDH through deeper integration within Penn Medicine, fostering stronger alignment and engagement while expanding on PMDH’s community-driven culture. The CMO will champion a shared vision of clinical excellence, drive quality improvement initiatives, and oversee key functions including quality, patient safety, regulatory compliance, infection control, and medical affairs.

The CMO will also lead physician engagement and satisfaction initiatives, support graduate and continuing medical education, and serve as the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for the Residency Program.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the senior executive team, developing and executing organizational strategies.
  • Provide clinical and administrative expertise to the senior executive team, offering a medical staff perspective.
  • Lead and support quality initiatives, patient safety programs, infection control, accreditation, and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate in developing clinical effectiveness targets, improvement plans, and reporting systems to ensure high-quality, efficient patient care.
  • Develop and implement a physician alignment plan in collaboration with the executive management team.
  • Participate in the review, selection, performance management, and discipline of physicians.
  • Resolve conflicts, disagreements, and complaints constructively; investigate and respond to complaints with appropriate corrective actions.
  • Foster cooperation and collegiality with nursing and other clinical departments to achieve excellence in clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.
  • Monitor medical staff and hospital compliance with Medical Staff Bylaws and regulatory/accrediting body rules; recommend bylaw amendments as needed.
  • Formulate responses to citations, deficiencies, or enforcement actions related to the quality of care and address reports of unusual occurrences involving patients, families, and medical staff.
  • Review and approve operating budgets; monitor budget performance and implement new strategies as required.
  • Maintain awareness of relevant federal and state regulations and communicate changes to clinical teams.
  • Represent Doylestown Health at the Penn Medicine system level by participating in committees such as the CMO/CNO alliance.
  • Assist legal and risk management departments in resolving medical/legal issues and develop risk reduction strategies.
  • Establish annual department goals aligned with Doylestown Health’s Strategic Plan.
  • Empower, motivate, and mentor team members, fostering diversity of thought and perspectives.
  • Set performance expectations, assess leader and employee performance, and conduct timely appraisals.
  • Promote positive team interactions and ensure compliance with mandatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
  • 10+ years of experience in healthcare, with 5+ years in healthcare leadership.
  • Board certified in a relevant specialty.

  • Communication: Demonstrated consultative, team-building, and group facilitative skills.
  • Clinical: Knowledge of healthcare operations.
  • Operations: Comprehensive understanding of hospital operations.
  • Regulatory: Understanding of regulatory compliance, Joint Commission, and Department of Health processes and standards.
  • Project/Change Management: Ability to manage concurrent projects while meeting deadlines.
  • Finance: Strong financial and business acumen.
