About the role

The Chief Mechanical Officer oversees all mechanical operations for the South Shore Line, ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient maintenance and repair of the railroad's rolling stock and related equipment.

Responsibilities

• Direct and manage the mechanical department, including locomotive and passenger car maintenance, repair, and overhaul programs.
• Develop and implement maintenance schedules, procedures, and standards to ensure compliance with federal, state, and industry regulations.
• Oversee budgeting, procurement, and inventory management for mechanical operations.
• Ensure compliance with FRA (Federal Railroad Administration), OSHA, and other regulatory requirements.
• Lead safety initiatives and promote a culture of safety within the mechanical department.
• Collaborate with other departments to support operational efficiency and service reliability.
• Monitor industry trends and technological advancements to improve mechanical operations.
• Manage staff, including hiring, training, and performance evaluations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Railroad Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent experience.
• Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in railroad mechanical operations, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
• In-depth knowledge of FRA, OSHA, and other regulatory standards governing railroad mechanical operations.
• Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Experience with budgeting, procurement, and inventory management.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and railroad-specific software.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• Experience with commuter rail operations.
• Familiarity with lean manufacturing or continuous improvement methodologies.
