Chief Legal Officer, Bank, Johannesburg

About the role

The Chief Legal Officer will be responsible for providing strategic legal advice and support to the bank's management team and board of directors. This is a newly created in-house role based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive legal advice and counsel on a wide range of matters including banking regulations, compliance, corporate governance, and risk management.
• Oversee the development and implementation of legal policies and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Manage external legal counsel and negotiate contracts and agreements.
• Represent the bank in legal disputes and litigation.
• Ensure the bank adheres to all relevant laws and regulations.

Requirements

• At least 10 years of experience in a senior legal role, preferably in a financial services or banking environment.
• LLB degree or equivalent legal qualification.
• Proven track record of successfully managing legal teams and delivering high-quality legal services.
• Excellent negotiation and communication skills.
• Experience in dealing with regulators and compliance bodies.

Qualifications

• Admitted to practice law in South Africa.
• Knowledge of local and international banking laws and regulations.
• Experience in dispute resolution and litigation.
