Chief Hematology/Oncology

About the role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Responsibilities

• Administer the administrative management of the Hematology/Oncology Section and provide comprehensive patient care through hematological/oncological consultative patient and daily care of Veterans.
• Support the robust cancer clinical trials program within the department.
• Maintain high clinical standards and continuously strive to enhance teaching skills to effectively teach fellows from the academic affiliate, Columbia University.
• Perform hands-on clinical work, oversight, and administration of all aspects of the Hematology/Oncology Section, including guidance and training for medical residents, fellows, and other trainees.
• Communicate and document with clarity to patients and medical personnel to coordinate patient care.
• Supervise Physicians, including annual proficiency rating and determination of pay for performance.
• Monitor clinical competence of staff through FPPE and OPPE completion.
• Supervise all staff, including midlevels within the Hematology/Oncology Section.
• Provide consultative input to patient care, collaborate with midlevel providers and physician colleagues with clear communication and documentation.
• Participate in educational programs for the Section personnel as well as the medical staff.
• Participate in monitoring the quality, safety, and appropriateness of patient care, both at the Section and facility level.
• Participate in various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, such as Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams, as assigned by Section Chief and/or Chief of Medical Service.

Requirements

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• At least 5 years of Hematology/Oncology practice.
• Physical Requirements: This position requires: lifting, carrying; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (8 hours); standing (8 hours); repeated bending; working alone; protracted or irregular hours of work and occasional emotional strain.
