Chief Financial Officer - Columbus Ohio
About the Role
Improveit Home Remodeling is seeking a hands-on financial operator, strategic business partner, systems builder, and change leader to serve as Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This role is designed to strengthen the way we run the business today while preparing us to scale significantly tomorrow. The CFO will report to our COO and collaborate closely with our executive leadership team to enhance financial visibility, strengthen controls, optimize margins, modernize systems, and enable faster, more informed business decisions.
This is not a traditional CFO role centered primarily on financial reporting, portfolio oversight, or investor relations. We need a leader who can help architect the roadmap, build capabilities, and create a scalable financial foundation to support our next wave of growth as we aim to reach $150M and beyond.
Responsibilities
- Financial Strategy and Business Partnership
- Serve as a strategic partner to the COO, CGO, CEO, and executive leadership team
- Translate financial performance into clear insights, recommendations, and business actions
- Guide pricing methodologies, market expansion, operational investments, resource allocation, and long-range growth decisions
- Develop annual budgets, financial forecasts, scenario models, and long-range planning tools
- Identify trends, opportunities, risks, and performance gaps before they affect the business
- Bring disciplined financial thinking to major strategic and operational decisions
- Performance, Profitability, and Growth
- Lead forecasting, cost containment, margin improvement, and economic optimization initiatives
- Identify opportunities to increase profitability without compromising the customer or employee experience
- Establish meaningful financial and operational metrics that help leaders understand performance and take action
- Improve the availability, accuracy, and usefulness of decision-ready financial data across the organization
- Partner with operational leaders to turn financial insights into measurable performance improvements
- Finance and Accounting Operations
- Own the accuracy and integrity of the company’s financial reporting and P&L
- Oversee accounting, budgeting, cash flow, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, audits, tax compliance, and financial reporting
- Strengthen internal controls, financial policies, risk-management practices, and operating discipline
- Ensure timely, accurate, and actionable reporting
- Lead relationships with auditors, banks, insurers, and other financial partners
- Protect company assets and ensure compliance with applicable tax, legal, regulatory, and financial-reporting requirements
- Financial Systems, Technology, and Scalability
- Collaborate with Technology leadership to own and continuously improve the finance and accounting technology stack
- Evaluate and implement systems that improve accuracy, efficiency, visibility, and scalability
- Simplify manual processes and reduce organizational dependence on disconnected spreadsheets or workarounds
- Leverage automation, analytics, and emerging technologies—including AI—to improve the financial operation
- Build infrastructure that can support continued geographic and revenue growth
- Team and Leadership
- Build, develop, and lead a high-performing finance and accounting organization
- Establish clear expectations, accountability, operating rhythms, and performance standards
- Develop the team’s ability to serve as proactive business partners—not simply processors or reporters of financial information
- Create a culture of accuracy, urgency, continuous improvement, collaboration, and ownership
- Be a visible, accessible executive leader who works alongside the business and understands how the operation performs in practice
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; MBA preferred
- At least 8–10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience across both tactical and strategic responsibilities
- Demonstrated success leading finance and accounting teams
- Strong financial modeling, forecasting, planning, and business-analysis capabilities
- Experience improving profitability, financial processes, reporting, systems, or operational performance
- Deep knowledge of financial reporting, compliance, internal controls, and risk management
- Experience selecting, implementing, or optimizing financial technology
- Strong executive presence and the ability to influence leaders throughout an organization
- The ability to communicate complex financial information clearly and directly
- Experience in a high-growth, operationally intensive organization
- Experience in home improvement, home services, construction, consumer services, or another multi-market operating environment is highly valuable
Qualifications
You are likely to thrive at Improveit if:
- You want to build, improve, and transform—not simply maintain
- You have led through periods of meaningful growth or are ready to demonstrate that you can
- You balance executive-level thinking with roll-up-your-sleeves execution
- You naturally look for better systems, clearer processes, stronger controls, and more useful data
- You understand that financial leadership extends beyond reporting what happened; it requires helping the business decide what should happen next
- You can move between the strategic view and the underlying transaction, process, assumption, or data point
- You are energized by operational complexity and know how to create clarity within it
- You communicate financial information in a way that operating leaders can understand and use
- You are willing to challenge assumptions, ask difficult questions, and recommend action
- You value accountability, high standards, continuous improvement, and measurable results
- You believe executive leadership requires being present, connected, and actively engaged with the people and operations you support
This opportunity may not be the right fit if you are primarily seeking a remote executive role, prefer to lead from a distance, or are most comfortable inheriting mature systems that require limited change.
