About the role

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) oversees the financial aspects of UP Health-Portage in Hancock, Michigan. UP Health System is a leading healthcare provider with three primary hospitals and multiple clinics, offering a wide range of services and specialized care.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and direction to all financial departments for the overall fiscal responsibility of the hospital.
  • Administers general accounting, patient business services, including third-party reimbursement, financial, and statistical reporting functions.
  • Trains subordinates on data processing, distributed systems, material management, and medical records functions.
  • Develops long and short-range operational and capital budgets, supporting the hospital’s plans and objectives.
  • Monitors and analyzes hospital financial performance to ensure alignment with established plans and objectives.
  • Identifies and reports undesirable trends and potential business opportunities, making recommendations for action.
  • Prepares cash flow analyses and budget variance analyses.
  • Assures the timely and accurate preparation of financial reports, reflecting the hospital’s financial position accurately.
  • Directs the preparation of internal financial reports, including work papers for annual financial audits.
  • Assures the timely submission of all financial data required by government and other regulated agencies, including payroll tax reports, public disclosure reports, and third-party payor cost reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance, with knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • CPA or Master's Degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience working at the CFO level in an acute-care hospital.
  • A minimum of three years of progressive management experience in an investor-owned healthcare organization.
  • A strong, hands-on, and approachable leader with a team-player mindset.
  • A motivated and inspiring leader who understands the importance of employee satisfaction.

Qualifications

  • Verbal, interpersonal, and quantitative skills normally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
  • Outgoing and friendly personality.
  • Understanding of market trends, financial reports, and operating procedures.
  • Knowledge of how to reduce operating costs and increase revenues.

Skills

  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and report trends.
  • Experience with budgeting and financial planning.
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulations and compliance.
