About the Opportunity

The Mental Health Association of Maryland is conducting a national search for its next Chief Executive Officer. This is a rare opportunity to lead one of the country's most storied mental health advocacy organizations at a pivotal moment in behavioral health policy, funding, and public awareness. The incoming CEO will inherit a strong organizational foundation, a dedicated team, and deep statewide relationships built over more than a century of mission-driven work.

Responsibilities

  • Provide visionary strategic leadership and set organizational direction in partnership with the Board; serve as the organization's chief external spokesperson across all programs, partnerships, and mission areas
  • Oversee all programs including Mental Health First Aid Maryland, Older Adults Vibrant Minds, Healthy New Moms, Children’s Mental Health Matters, the Consumer Quality Team, and Brain Futures; lead a talented staff team and build organizational capacity
  • Drive fundraising and development strategy to grow and diversify revenue; manage a $6.4M annual budget and ensure financial health and sustainability; deepen MHAMD’s coalitions, partnerships, and relationships across government, community, programmatic, and private sector partners statewide

Qualifications

  • Senior nonprofit or mission-driven organizational leadership experience as a CEO, Executive Director, or C-suite equivalent (including COO, CPO, or comparable roles with organizational scope), with demonstrated board accountability and P&L responsibility
  • Proven track record managing multi-program organizations and leading high-performing staff teams
  • Experience leading or overseeing multi-program organizations spanning advocacy, education, training, and community-based programs; experience in public policy and government relations a strong plus
  • Strong fundraising and development experience, including cultivation of individual donors, foundations, and government contracts
  • Exceptional communications and public speaking skills; ability to serve as a credible external spokesperson

Preferred Skills and Competencies

  • Deep knowledge of the behavioral health or mental health landscape in Maryland, the mid-Atlantic region, or nationally
  • Experience building coalitions and partnerships across government, advocacy, community, education, training, and programmatic areas
  • Understanding of how advocacy and program work strengthen each other
  • Demonstrated commitment to reducing stigma and advancing health equity
  • Graduate degree in public health, social work, public policy, nonprofit management, or a related field
