Chief Engineer, Facilities

About the role

The Chief Engineer is responsible for building maintenance, equipment, and repairs on-site. This role manages and mentors maintenance staff to ensure work is completed properly and timely. The Chief Engineer purchases supplies, materials, and equipment while staying within budget and maintains necessary inventory. Collaboration with other managers or supervisors is essential to ensure smooth operations, safety, and cleanliness standards are met.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership to direct reports, including performance management, feedback, and formal annual performance reviews.
• Mentor all new and existing staff to maximize abilities.
• Responsible for hiring, counseling, and discipline of department staff according to established policies.
• Participate in the recruitment process to ensure the department is adequately staffed.
• Supervise every phase of projects from start to completion.
• Delegate tasks to the engineering team.
• Train staff and supervise staff training.
• Supervise equipment installation.
• Perform quality control checks on all systems and products.
• Purchase supplies, materials, and equipment without exceeding budget.

Requirements

• Combined 5-10 years of commercial building engineering or Facilities Management experience.
• Three years of supervisor experience as a senior or equivalent lead role.
• Five years of facilities operational experience over multiple buildings.
• Experience in construction and maintenance cost estimating practices.
• Extensive experience reading complex architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, communications, and landscaping plans.
• In-depth knowledge of general maintenance practices for structural, mechanical, electrical, and landscaping components.
• Working knowledge of HVAC units.
• EPA Technician Certification, preferably Universal Classification.
• Massachusetts refrigeration license.
• Building automation systems experience.
• Proficiency in Outlook, Word, and Excel.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to relate to people in a friendly and professional manner.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Strong decision-making skills.
• Ability to create effective working relationships with employees.
• Ability to maintain a positive attitude and work under pressure.
• Valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
• Advanced analytical and quantitative skills.

Physical Requirements

Work conditions vary and may include hazardous environments with exposure to chemicals, steam, electricity, and heavy machinery. Wet, noisy, hot, and cold conditions may exist. Physical requirements include stooping, standing, climbing, and frequent lifting of a minimum of 50 lbs.

Pay

$86,918.00 - $130,378.00 per year
