Chief Engineer
About the role
The Chief Engineer is responsible for ensuring the highest level of professionalism while meeting clients' needs and achieving 100% uptime throughout the engineering team. This role involves operational management and daily leadership of the engineering team to safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively operate machinery and systems. The Chief Engineer implements and manages a reliability-based maintenance function, protects and improves the value of client assets, and ensures building engineering systems perform their intended functions.
Responsibilities
- Monitors and maintains refrigeration, air conditioning, heating, ventilating, hot water equipment, pumps, valves, piping, filters, and other mechanical/electrical equipment; reviews logs to ensure proper operation and reports problems as needed.
- Performs preventive maintenance tasks and oversees repair and preventive maintenance of HVAC systems; determines repair and maintenance frequency.
- Ensures adequate inventory of tools and supplies; prepares purchase orders, develops stock material sources, and performs periodic inventory and equipment condition checks.
- Oversees contractors working within the building, ensuring tenant and building safety.
- Identifies safety hazards, implements remediation, and administers safety training programs.
- Ensures compliance with all regulatory laws and guidelines related to building infrastructure.
- Maintains infrastructure and compliance documentation, including up-to-date building drawings and regulatory compliance records.
- Supervises and manages building engineers and maintenance staff, including hiring, training, and development.
- Develops and ensures understanding of the Facility Work Flow (FWF) process among staff, engineers, tenants, and contractors.
- Implements QA/QC processes and facilitates MEP and infrastructure assessments.
- Emphasizes preventive over corrective maintenance and supports staff schedule changes.
- Assists with design standards and serves as a resource for operational issues.
- Provides training and support to expand the capabilities of the operations staff, including hands-on instruction in maintenance, safety, and troubleshooting.
- Stays updated on safety and code changes through seminars and educational means.
- Inputs information into the client work order tracking system for unscheduled jobs and material ordering; provides technical support for projects.
- Responds to emergency situations, troubleshoots and repairs problems, and may be on-call for rapid response.
- Conducts general housekeeping in mechanical/electrical rooms, including sweeping, mopping, and painting.
- Completes work in accordance with company Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional education.
- One-year certificate from college or technical school, or five to seven years of related experience/training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Universal CFC certification.
- Technical degree in HVAC or five or more years of related experience.
- Active Refrigeration Technician’s license.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work in tight spaces.
- Performs physical labor related to maintenance and repair.
- Moderate to loud noise levels in the work environment.
- Possible frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock.
- Occasional exposure to wet/humid conditions, high/precarious places, and outside weather conditions.
- Availability to respond to after-hours emergencies as necessary.
