Chief Engineer

About the Role

Oversee the operation management and effective daily leadership of the facility maintenance team, ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of machinery and systems. This senior-level role protects and enhances the value of client assets while ensuring engineering systems perform their intended functions.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement strategic plans, goals, and objectives for the department aligned with organizational vision.
• Foster a culture of collaboration, teamwork, and innovation within the facility maintenance team.
• Identify and remediate safety hazards to ensure a safe environment for building occupants.
• Implement and manage safety training programs; ensure compliance with regulatory laws and guidelines.
• Alert management of building discrepancies and maintain infrastructure and compliance documentation, including up-to-date building drawings and single-lines.
• Comply with company safety rules (e.g., Lock Out Tag Out, NEC 70e, OSHA 10) and complete Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) Program training to attain Level 1 status.
• Oversee the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of engineering systems, processes, and procedures.
• Monitor and maintain refrigeration, HVAC, boilers, pumps, valves, piping, filters, and other mechanical/electrical equipment; review logs and report malfunctions.
• Perform preventive maintenance tasks and oversee the Preventive Maintenance Program for HVAC systems.
• Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, regulations, and best practices.
• Assess engineering system performance, identify improvements, and implement solutions.
• Manage and optimize departmental budgets, resources, and projects to meet operational and financial targets.
• Provide technical guidance for complex problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making.
• Stay updated with industry trends and recommend technologies to enhance efficiency.
• Train and develop engineering staff, conduct performance evaluations, and foster a safe, inclusive work environment.
• Collaborate with other departments, stakeholders, contractors, vendors, and regulatory agencies.
• Communicate engineering initiatives, progress, and challenges to senior management.

Requirements

• 7+ years of facility-related work experience, including leadership and supervisory roles.
• Minimum 6 years of documented work experience in HVAC or Electrical trades, or 4 years of trade experience plus 2 years of supporting education.
• Managerial experience and comprehensive knowledge of maintenance processes.
• Understanding of construction planning and execution.
• Exposure to HVAC, fluid handling/pumping, fluid filtering, mechanical systems, and electrical systems engineering.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and CMMS systems.
• Strong verbal/written communication and customer service skills.
• Certification as a Universal Technician for CFCs (or within 90 days of employment).
• 2-year degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent work experience.

Physical Requirements

• Frequent walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting, stooping, and overhead work.
• Walking across large, campus-like settings.
• Infrequent lifting of a minimum of 80 lbs.
• Climbing stairs and navigating rooftops to access equipment.
• Working from heights using ladders and aerial work platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

• Operating Engineers license (SMA) or equivalent.
