Chemistry Lab Coordinator

About the role

The Chem Lab Coordinator at Nucor Steel West Virginia LLC is responsible for overseeing daily chemical laboratory operations, managing maintenance and calibration, and supporting testing activities.

Responsibilities

• Lead and ensure compliance with all safety, quality, environmental, and regulatory requirements while maintaining audit-ready documentation and operational standards.
• Oversee laboratory testing activities, sample traceability, analytical equipment operation, and accurate communication of results to production systems.
• Manage preventive maintenance, calibration, verification activities, and equipment records to ensure reliable and accurate laboratory performance.
• Train, qualify, and validate competency of laboratory personnel on analytical systems, equipment, procedures, and safe work practices.
• Collaborate with production and technical teams to support testing priorities and effective communication.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance testing accuracy, turnaround time, procedural standardization, and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, or related field
• One year of experience with Spectrometry and combustion analysis (Leco/OES preferred)
• Industrial lab operations and sample preparation

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a steel mill or heavy industrial laboratory
• Strong understanding of Safety programs (LOTOTO, PPE)
• Quality systems (ISO 9001 / ISO 17025 concepts)
• Knowledge of ASTM chemistry testing methods (e.g., ASTM A751)
• Experience with Laboratory calibration programs and MSA concepts
• Level 2/3 automation systems
