About the role

We are looking for a Chemist 2 to join our team in Crete, IL (3600 Eagle Nest Dr, North Building). As part of our mission to make food systems safer, healthier, and more sustainable, you will perform chemical analysis on food or pharmaceutical samples, ensuring accurate preparation, processing, and interpretation of results.

Responsibilities

• Analyze the concentration of components in food or pharmaceutical samples using instrumentation such as GC, LC, ICPMS, HPLC, and ICP.
• Prepare materials, samples, standards, and reagents for analysis.
• Monitor daily departmental activities, from sample receipt to result reporting, ensuring analyses are performed correctly.
• Provide guidance to departmental personnel on analysis procedures and sample preparation.
• Analyze and interpret data, correcting discrepancies before results are released to clients.
• Ensure compliance with method requirements and maintain data integrity.
• Maintain and perform minor repairs on laboratory instruments.
• Initiate and investigate customer complaints and non-conformances, determining root causes and corrective actions.
• Maintain knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to fulfill job responsibilities.
• Identify departures from the quality system or test procedures and document observations per the prescribed complaint system.
• Perform new methods with minimal supervision and keep training up-to-date.
• Maintain equipment records in appropriate software systems and meet housekeeping schedules.
• Wash glassware and prepare samples as needed.
• Support laboratory management in implementing, maintaining, and improving the management system.
• Perform other related tasks as required.

Requirements

• Associate degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• 2–5 years of experience in a relevant laboratory setting.
• General knowledge of chemistry to perform analyses, obtain correct results, and interpret data.
• Basic knowledge of instrumentation and theory, including HPLC, GC, and AA.
• Basic knowledge of food science is helpful for analyzing chemical content in samples.
• Broad knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and policies to ensure a safe working environment.

Work Environment

The role is based in a laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control. Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials may occur. Safety equipment such as gloves, laboratory coats, and eyeglasses may be required depending on the testing process. The incumbent may use an autoclave daily and should be prepared for:

• Continuous lifting of materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Extended periods of standing.
• The ability to detect slight variations in shades of color.

Pay

Compensation range: $22–$24 USD per hour.
