About the role

The position involves overseeing the growth and development of student athletes, focusing on fundamental skills instruction and whole child development. Responsibilities include general professional development, understanding and enforcing rules and regulations, promoting the sport, organizing practices, ensuring safety, maintaining professionalism, upholding sportsmanship and ethics, and administrative supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Keep abreast of sport-specific literature and attend clinics/workshops.
  • Study and understand WIAA rules and regulations.
  • Promote the sport within the school and community.
  • Hold daily practices and organize practice sessions.
  • Determine the system of play for the program.
  • Provide safety training and first aid.
  • Exercise good judgment and project positive coaching behaviors.
  • Serve as an example of sportsmanship and humility.
  • Report scores and contest-related information to media and the league website.
  • Attend building, district, league, and rules clinic meetings.
  • Work through the building athletic director for post-season gatherings.
  • Makes scheduling recommendations to the building athletic director.
  • Monitor and report on safety concerns and equipment maintenance.
  • Develop/cut program participants and award criteria.
  • Prepare and submit an annual budget request.
  • Seek approval for fundraising activities.

Requirements

  • At least 19 years of age for assistant coaching positions, 21 years of age for head coaching positions.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of sport-specific playing/coaching experience in a secondary/post-secondary athletics program.
  • Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Online Concussion Training.

Qualifications

  • Five or more years of paid high school and/or post-secondary sport-specific coaching experience.
  • Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course.
  • Knowledge of WIAA rules and regulations.
  • Ability to organize, administer, and oversee a sport-specific athletics program.
  • Compliance with school board policies and administrative procedures.
  • Effective communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and pay strict attention to detail.
  • Positive customer relations and teamwork.
  • Confidentiality and ethical standards.
