26-27 Athletics - Assistant Cheer Coach (Fall Season)
Position Summary
The coach of an individual sport must realize that any activity sponsored by SHS Athletics is part of the total program offered by SHS. Individuals in charge of such activities must utilize sound educational principles and goals if athletics are to be a worthwhile part of the overall school program.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Teach cheer techniques, motion, tumbling, and stunting.
- Aid in developing and choreographing routines for sidelines, pep rallies, and competitions.
- Maintain up-to-date CPR/AED and safety certifications (e.g., USA Cheer or NFHS).
- Assist in planning practices, organizing tryouts, ordering uniforms, and managing travel logistics for games and tournaments.
- Track student-athletes' academic progress and enforce team conduct standards.
- Attend scheduled games, competitions, and camps to supervise the team and promote a positive, spirited environment.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Abilities, & Skills
- Bachelor's degree;
- Strong communication skills;
- Knowledge of MSSADA rules;
- Potential for coaching certification;
- Previous coaching and/or cheering experience preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Mobility & Stamina: Coaches need the stamina to stand, walk, and occasionally run on gym floors or game fields for extended periods.
- Strength & Spotting: Upper-body and core strength are necessary to physically spot and catch athletes during partner stunts and tumbling passes to prevent injuries.
- Dexterity & Coordination: Coaches require excellent hand-eye coordination for spotting, running equipment, and operating choreography or video analysis software.
Sensory Acuity
Normal vision and hearing are essential to monitor multiple athletes simultaneously, observe technique errors, and respond to emergency situations.
Reporting Relationships
Position Reports to: The Athletics Director

- Position Type: Seasonal Employment
- Shift Types: Evenings, weekends, and holidays

Salary and benefits
Salary and benefits are determined in accordance with the Somerville Educators Union, Unit A collective bargaining agreement and the policies of the Somerville School Committee.
