About the role

This 18-bed cardiac unit specializes in the care of both cardiac and vascular patients. The typical patient population includes those with diagnoses such as chest pain, cardiac dysrhythmias, CHF exacerbation, hypertensive emergencies, pulmonary embolism and/or DVT, and patients who have undergone AAA repair and carotid endarterectomy. Our unit is an intermediate/step-down unit with a nurse to patient ratio typically of 1:4.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the delivery of quality nursing care for patients from birth through the lifecycle, as well as operational issues during his/her shift.
  • Provides clinical care as needed when census demands.
  • Communicates patient care, departmental issues, and staff concerns to the appropriate leader(s).
  • Serves as resource for guidance and assistance to the staff.
  • Monitors patient care delivery, to include appropriate implementation of protocol, administration of medications, and treatment modalities.
  • Communicates patient flow/patient care issues to appropriate physician and/or clinical manager.
  • Captivates issues of diversion, as appropriate.
  • Coordinates equitable distribution of staff assignments based on skill mix, staffing levels, patient diagnosis, volume, and acuity. Adjusts assignments as needed during the shift.
  • Fairly and equitably administers departmental and hospital policies.
  • Aids the clinical manager, as necessary, to ensure appropriate staffing levels and most efficient use of staffing plan.
  • Maintains a high level of clinical competency in administering nursing care to include accurate determination of patients acuity and Implements appropriate medical response to include use of protocols/policies/pathways.
  • Promptly reports issues that cannot be resolved during the shift to clinical manager, with suggestions for resolution.
  • Ensures that system issues involving other departments, that can cause decreased quality of care or productivity, are reported to the clinical manager.
  • Promotes customer satisfaction by responding to service issues in a timely and effective manner.
  • Serves as a resource and a role model for the nursing and ancillary staff on the assigned unit.

Requirements

  • Graduate from a recognized, accredited school of nursing
  • Required Bachelors Degree
  • Required 1 year of nursing experience in a hospital setting
  • Preferred 2 years or more years of nursing experience in a hospital setting
  • RN - Registered Nurse - Georgia State Licensure and/or NLC/eNCL Multistate Licensure
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support
  • Advanced certification in field of specialty, if applicable (see addendum)
  • ACLS Certification (Cardiac Tele, Critical Care, Surgical Services including Labor and Delivery)
  • PALS Certification (Emergency Department)
  • Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Certification prior to independent chemotherapy administration (Infusion/Oncology)
  • NRP by the end of orientation period (Womens Services: Labor and Delivery, Mother/Baby, NICU, NAT, Nursery)
  • PEARS Certification ( at Piedmont Athens Hospital)
  • PALS if unit provides care to pediatric patients (Surgical Services)
  • ACLs and PALS Certification (Emergency Department)
  • Experienced Emergency Department nurses will have 30 days to obtain the PALS certification within 30 Days

Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate from a recognized, accredited school of nursing
  • Experience: 1 year of nursing experience in a hospital setting
  • Licenses and Certifications: RN - Registered Nurse - Georgia State Licensure and/or NLC/eNCL Multistate Licensure, BCLS - Basic Life Support, ACLS Certification (Cardiac Tele, Critical Care, Surgical Services including Labor and Delivery), PALS Certification (Emergency Department), ACLS and PALS Certification (Emergency Department), NRP by the end of orientation period (Womens Services: Labor and Delivery, Mother/Baby, NICU, NAT, Nursery), PEARS Certification ( at Piedmont Athens Hospital), PALS if unit provides care to pediatric patients (Surgical Services), ACLS and PALS Certification (Emergency Department)
