This role assumes shift responsibility and accountability for planning and providing direct and indirect nursing care to patients, families, and care partners. The Charge Nurse coordinates multi-disciplinary team members, directs nursing staff, and facilitates safe, optimal healthcare outcomes while supporting the facility’s vision, mission, and goals. Patient-Centered Care principles guide all nursing activities.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and evaluate an age-appropriate plan of care using the nursing process, clinical skills, and patient education.
• Maintain professional behavior when addressing issues or conflicts, utilizing resources as needed.
• Provide a safe environment for patients, families, visitors, and employees by assessing risks and implementing appropriate precautions.
• Comply with safety, injury prevention, and patient care standards as outlined by the organization and accrediting agencies.
• Utilize leadership skills to delegate tasks and provide feedback on staff performance.
• Demonstrate initiative, collaboration, and sound judgment in day-to-day unit management.
• Manage department outcomes to ensure satisfaction for patients, families, peers, employees, and physicians through effective communication and responsiveness.
• Ensure appropriate staffing for each shift based on patient census, acuity, and available resources.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited or NLN-approved RN program.
• Must successfully pass any pre-employment assessment(s).
• BLS certification from the American Heart Association (or obtained during orientation) and maintained throughout employment.
• Current Texas state nursing license or permit to practice.
• De-escalation training within 90 days of hire (does not require ongoing maintenance).
• Ongoing compliance with clinically pertinent competencies as determined by the facility.
• 100% score on a medication test (two attempts allowed with remediation material available).
• ACLS completion within three months of hire or promotion.
• Must pass EKG, Blood Gas Analysis, and BKAT exams.
• Satisfactory return demonstration of competencies for critical care processes and equipment.

Preferred:

• One year full-time or three years part-time experience in an acute care setting.
• CCRN, TNCC, or Cardiovascular certification for specialty units.
