About the Role

The Charge Nurse is a leadership role that oversees shift operations and ensures safe patient care. This position acts as an extension of the leadership team, embodying the Relationship Based Care model, and serves as a mentor for staff. The Charge Nurse is accountable for achieving excellent outcomes and must be applied for, granting authority to lead.

Responsibilities

  • Collects and analyzes data, identifies expected outcomes, and develops an individualized plan for patient care.
  • Coordinates care delivery and evaluates progress toward attainment of outcomes.
  • Directs care and determines appropriate utilization of assistants involved in providing direct patient care.
  • Collaborates with patients, families, physicians, and ancillary staff.
  • Creates a documented plan focused on outcomes and decisions related to care delivery.
  • Participates in shared governance, committee work, and unit projects.
  • Evaluates and documents patient responses to nursing interventions and adjusts the plan of care accordingly.
  • Utilizes evidence-based practices, including research findings, to guide decisions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) acceptable with a commitment to obtain a BSN within three years of employment.
  • Current State of Illinois Registered Professional Nurse license.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with others.
  • Strong analytic abilities.

Qualifications

  • Previous charge nurse experience.
  • Current or obtain certification in a national nursing specialty.
  • 2 years of experience or recommendation by Unit Leadership.
  • Preferred: Experience in a specific clinical area, such as the Emergency Room or Pediatric Emergency Room.
  • Preferred certifications: Trauma Nurse Specialist (TNS), Emergency Communications Registered Nurse, Certified Pediatric Nurse, or Certified Emergency Nurse.
