An Emergency Room Charge Nurse (RN) oversees the efficient functioning of the ER, balancing administrative duties with patient care. The Charge Nurse coordinates patient flow, ensuring the right resources are available for patient needs and that priority cases are addressed promptly. This Registered Nurse manages staffing, assigning duties based on skill and patient load while providing guidance and support to the nursing team. An Emergency Room Charge Nurse also consult with doctors and departments to streamline operations and maintain clear communication. Charge nurses manage complex care cases, resolve conflicts, mentor staff, and ensure compliance with healthcare policies, all while fostering a cohesive, efficient team environment that enhances patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers decisive, high-acuity emergency care while leading rapid assessment, intervention, and coordination to stabilize patients and drive optimal outcomes.
  • Perform rapid triage, assessment, and patient stabilization
  • Deliver high-acuity care including IV therapy, medications, and cardiac monitoring
  • Respond to emergencies and clinical deterioration with speed and precision
  • Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary teams on real-time care decisions
  • Ensure accurate, compliant documentation (EMTALA, regulatory standards)
  • Educate patients and families on treatment and discharge plans
  • Maintain patient safety, HIPAA compliance, and quality care standards
  • Apply expertise in trauma care, arrhythmia interpretation, and emergency protocols

Qualifications

  • Current and valid state RN License
  • Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
  • Current ACLS (AHA) certificate 30 days upon hire and maintain current.
  • Current PALS (AHA) certificate and/or ENPC required 30 days upon hire and maintain current.
  • Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNNC) within 6 months of hire required.
  • Previous supervisory experience, preferred.
  • Minimum of one year as a staff nurse in an acute care hospital setting, E.D. setting preferred.
  • Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) within 2 years of hire, preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Facility Specific Requirements

  • In Paramedic Base Station ED, MICN, within 12 months of hire.
  • EDAP Certified Facilities: Completion of emergency pediatric course 1 & 2 within 30 days of hire. Minimum of 4 hours of CEU in Pediatric Training Classes per year ENPC preferred.
  • Non OB facilities: NRP (AHA) certificate within 30 days upon hire and maintain current.
  • Non OB facilities: Advanced or AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring certificate within 30 days upon hire.
