The Role
The Chaplain – Spiritual Services position at Evanston Hospital, Skokie Hospital, Highland Park Hospital, and Glenbrook Hospital offers per diem opportunities.
Responsibilities
- Provide care appropriate to the patient population served, including spiritual, emotional, and life stage needs.
- Deliver timely, person-centered spiritual/religious/emotional care to patients, their family/loved ones, and staff.
- Serve as a backup to full-time Chaplains to maintain 24/7 Spiritual Care and Support Department staffing and hospital coverage.
- Triage and manage multiple requests effectively.
- Engage in evidence-informed spiritual assessment and develop, document, and implement a plan of care.
- Partner with community clergy and connect care recipients with appropriate community resources.
- Promote patient safety by reporting safety issues and participating in safety initiatives.
- Engage in regular, purposeful rounding and collaborate with interdisciplinary staff.
- Aid patients and families/loved ones with Advance Care Planning and document it in the electronic health record.
- Participate in the life and work of the Spiritual Care and Support Department to ensure integrated, effective services.
- Attend team meetings and professional development activities.
- Document and report on spiritual care visits as required.
- Participate in hospital- or region-wide activities and events.
- Maintain a collaborative, collegial relationship with the Spiritual Care and Support Director, site Supervisor Chaplains, and ACPE Educator.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Certification: 1 unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) from an accredited Association for Clinical Pastoral Education Center required; 2 units preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience in a healthcare setting; acute-care hospital preferred.
- Interpersonal and empathetic skills/abilities necessary to support patients, families/loved ones, and employees.
- Analytic, critical thinking, and communication skills necessary to assess patients' spiritual needs and sense of wellbeing, identify appropriate resources, and communicate via both verbally and written.
- Ability to document visits using a variety of electronic resources.
- A commitment to teamwork and contributing positively to the Spiritual Care and Support team.
Qualifications
- Requires light physical effort. May require frequent periods of standing or walking. May require frequent lifting or moving of lightweight material, and occasional moving or lifting of average-weight material.
- Flow of work and character of duties involve part normal and part concentrated attention.

Pay
The hourly pay range is $26.61 - $39.92, determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience.
Schedule
Shifts are Sunday through Saturday, 8:30a – 5:00p on-call shifts as scheduled, and Saturday, Sunday and Holiday 8:30a – 5:00p on-call shifts as scheduled.
