About the role

Shares in the ministry of caring for the spiritual and emotional needs of patients, their families, and the hospital staff. Provides religious counseling, supportive care, and guidance. Assists patients to understand more fully life’s events as they relate to their spiritual and emotional well-being.

Responsibilities

  • Regularly visits with all patients, especially new admissions, while daily giving priority to referrals and those in greatest need
  • Provides sacramental ministry, religious counseling, and crisis intervention as appropriate
  • Ensures pastoral availability to families and staff in times of crisis
  • Provides information about the availability of area clergy and makes contacts when requested
  • Makes ethics consult referrals for patients, family, and staff pursuant to the CMC Clinical Ethics Services policy
  • Participates in patient care conferences and discharge planning rounds
  • Participates in departmental quality management activities
  • Maintains statistical reports of activities and submits to the Director, Office of Catholic Identity
  • Documents patient visitations and logs interactions for interdepartmental communication
  • Attends departmental staff meetings and serves on hospital and community committees
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned or requested

Requirements

  • Ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly (Strength Factor: Light Work)
  • Ability to wear protective clothing such as masks, gloves, gowns, and glasses
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and respond appropriately to unexpected situations
  • Ability to maintain communications and establish working relationships with employees, physicians, patients, and the public
  • Ability to accept constructive feedback and initiate appropriate actions to correct situations
  • Familiarity with quality improvement initiatives
  • Ability to transport self to and from off-site locations

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Theology or a related field
  • Two or more credits of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) preferred
  • Three years in hospital ministry preferred
  • Certification by NACC, ACPE, or COC preferred
