About the Role

The Chaplain is responsible for responding to the spiritual needs of patients, families, and staff throughout the organization. Reporting to the Director of Spiritual Care & Education, the Chaplain provides spiritual support to patients and their loved ones confronting serious illness, difficult treatment decisions, feelings of alienation, despair, or hopelessness. The Chaplain functions as a team member of the Department of Spiritual Care & Education at Mount Sinai Morningside (MSM) and throughout the Mount Sinai Health System, collaborating with interdisciplinary care teams, professionals, and the community.

Responsibilities

• Visit patients on assigned floors, throughout the hospital, and in outpatient settings as appropriate.
• Assess patient and family emotional, spiritual, and/or religious needs, provide appropriate interventions, and evaluate outcomes.
• Demonstrate necessary chaplaincy knowledge and skills, and communicate effectively with patients of all demographics.
• Participate in a limited on-call rotation as needed.
• Maintain relationships with clinical staff and other departments as a representative of the Department of Spiritual Care and Education.
• Provide care and support to hospital staff through 1:1 engagement and facilitation of group debriefs.
• Participate in interdisciplinary meetings to provide insight into patients’ spiritual well-being.
• Liaise with hospital priests and community clergy to address patients’ religious needs.
• Mentor and orient Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) students.
• Participate in and contribute to chaplaincy research initiatives.
• Present didactics on spiritual care topics to outside departments and units as requested.
• Organize and lead interfaith holiday services, memorials, and special events, including religion-specific services and activities connected to Spiritual Care Week, Wellness Week, and Nurses’ Week.
• Fulfill administrative and documentation requirements, including charting in the electronic medical record and drafting month-end reports with relevant data.
• Practice timely and open communication with all departments or team members involved in common projects.
• Serve on the hospital bioethics committee and others as invited.
• Cover basic department operations competently in the absence of other staff.
• Provide spiritual support and consultation during declared emergencies.
• Undertake, facilitate, or enhance hospital-community engagement as designated by the department or institution.
• Adhere to the code of ethics of the Association of Professional Chaplains.
• Maintain board certification by a national chaplain association once acquired.
• Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Master’s degree with a focus in theology or related fields preferred.
• Successful completion of four units of Clinical Pastoral Education in an accredited program preferred.
• 2 years of direct chaplaincy experience preferred.
• Experience working in a healthcare setting preferred.
• Certified—or certification-eligible—by the Association of Professional Chaplains, Neshama: the Association of Jewish Chaplains, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, the ACPE, or the Spiritual Care Association preferred.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $70,000 - $83,000 annually. Actual salaries depend on experience, education, and operational need and do not include bonuses, incentive pay, or other forms of compensation.
