About the Role

Pastoral Services assists the patient, family, and personnel in meeting their spiritual, social, and emotional needs during a time of illness, injury, or stress and ministers to all persons, regardless of their belief system. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with Mercy’s mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provide spiritual, social, and emotional support to patients, families, and staff.
  • Minister to individuals of all belief systems with compassion and respect.
  • Work independently within a pastoral team and collaborate with interdisciplinary clinical teams to ensure high patient satisfaction.
  • Respond to emotional and stressful situations with graciousness, kindness, and spiritual comfort.
  • Advocate for patients, families, or coworkers as needed.
  • Effectively use computer systems, pagers, and telephone systems.
  • Demonstrate self-reflection and adaptability in pastoral care.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in theology, ministry, divinity, or a related field; or equivalent education and experience.
  • One unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or equivalent experience (candidate has up to one year to complete the unit if equivalent experience is provided).
  • Experience visiting the sick in a ministry capacity.
  • In good standing with a community and endorsed or eligible for endorsement by a faith community.

  • Self-reflective and adaptable in work.
  • Ability to work in emotional and stressful situations.
  • Sensitivity to and respect for various religions.
  • Knowledge of pastoral theology, medical ethics, spirituality, death and dying, and crisis intervention.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some master’s level work in theology, ministry, counseling, divinity, or a related field.
  • Two units of CPE.
  • Current healthcare or military chaplaincy experience.
  • Language skills or experience with specific patient groups served.
