About the Role

The Chaplain provides spiritual care across the continuum in the healthcare setting, including inpatient acute, critical and progressive care, inpatient rehabilitation, perioperative areas, outpatient clinics, hospice care, behavioral health, and emergent care. The Chaplain offers interfaith pastoral and spiritual care to patients and families regardless of religious tradition and ensures 24/7 on-call coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates competence in critical thinking, interpersonal relationships, and technical skills by providing pastoral/spiritual care.
  • Provides pastoral/spiritual care across the continuum of care to patients and families with diverse religious traditions.
  • Effectively interacts with and provides pastoral/spiritual support to patients, families, and staff outside of the chaplain's spiritual tradition.
  • Functions as a pastoral/spiritual resource for hospital staff and students.
  • Coordinates psychological/spiritual/emotional support for staff impacted by significant patient or personal events.
  • Administers sacraments, as needed, to patients of diverse ages and traditions.
  • Conducts formal worship services open to patients, families, staff, physicians, students, and others.
  • Ensures devotional materials are available to meet the diverse needs of patients, families, and employees.
  • Functions in a team environment with other chaplains to coordinate pastoral/spiritual care and plan activities throughout the institution.
  • Provides off-hours (on-call) coverage on a rotational basis.
  • Collaborates with other chaplains to evaluate and improve current systems and processes.
  • Represents the hospital in the community through presentations and maintains relationships with community clergy.
  • Utilizes electronic health records and computer technology in alignment with departmental standards.
  • Participates in hospital committees and educational endeavors as assigned.
  • Recruits, develops, and oversees volunteer staff to support the department.
  • Collaborates with and supports a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program.
  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality and privacy.
  • Interacts courteously, respectfully, and in a customer-focused manner.
  • Provides service safely and efficiently.
  • Recognizes the importance of cultural awareness and provides spiritual care regardless of personal beliefs and values.
  • Understands the relationship between cost-effective resource use and quality patient service.
  • Recognizes the relationship between effective spiritual care and the patient experience.
  • Identifies and acts on threats to patient/family safety.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of hospital and department standards and policies.
  • Demonstrates safe, independent judgment in completing responsibilities.
  • Performs written communications accurately and legibly per department standards.
  • Adheres to the hospital’s established "Code of Ethics."
  • Recommends ideas for change/improvement within departmental and hospital frameworks.
  • Interacts with health team members to meet immediate and specific needs.
  • Receives and relays communication accurately, promptly, and courteously.
  • Works with other disciplines to provide seamless care.
  • Functions as a team player, assisting others in carrying out departmental duties.
  • Performs the professional, clinical, and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Divinity, Theology, or related religious/spiritual field.
  • One or more years of clinical or pastoral experience working with people of interfaith, inter-religious, and/or non-denominational backgrounds.
  • Ordained and/or endorsed by the denomination to which the chaplain belongs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate of Completion for four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) as recognized by a national certification organization.
